We Need to Talk About That Surprise Cameo in the ‘Westworld’ Season 4 Premiere

*Warning: Spoilers ahead*

After a two-year hiatus, Westworld is back for more head-scratching action. And while there are countless unanswered questions about what’s to come in season 4, there’s one surprise cameo that needs to be addressed: James Marsden.

The 48-year-old actor made an appearance at the end of the first episode, which is now streaming on HBO Max. The scene featured Marsden standing in the street, admiring Evan Rachel Wood from afar.

If you’re thinking, Teddy is back?!, you should know that might not be the case. Westworld season 4 takes place seven years in the future, and it’s completely different from past installments. Some characters—like Caleb (Aaron Paul) and Maeve (Thandie Newton)—are the same but have established new lives outside of the game. Other characters are completely new (but familiar), and this might be the case with Marsden.

For example, Evan Rachel Wood has returned for season 4—but not as Dolores (who died in season 3). Instead, she plays a brunette woman named Christina, who works as a writer for Olympiad Entertainment. Her job entails creating story lines for a virtual reality game. (Sound familiar?)

Since Marsden’s original character, Teddy, was killed in season 2, perhaps the actor is returning as someone else, too. Whoever he is, he seems to be drawn to Christina in the same way that Teddy was to Dolores.

There’s no saying where the story line will go, especially since the season 4 premiere presented more questions than answers. Like what is Maeve up to? And why is Christina being harassed by a mystery man? But if Marsden is involved, we’ll stay along for the ride… at least for now.

Westworld airs on Sundays at 9 p.m.
