The Craziest College Chants in America

Did your alma mater make the cut?

It’s football season, folks. And that means tailgating with your old pals, reminiscing on your wild years and screaming...some pretty weird cheers. From hog calls to a toast toss, here are our picks for the craziest college chants in America.

collegechant1

University Of Arkansas: "woo Pig Sooie"

Also known as “Calling the Hogs,” Arkansas’s chant pays homage to (what else?) the team’s mascot. You yell “Woooooooo Pig Sooie!” three times, then “Razorbacks!” for good measure--all accompanied by outstretched arms and punchy spirit fingers, naturally.

collegechant2

Ole Miss: "hotty Toddy"

The crowd who just spent the day at the Grove tailgate may look prim and proper, but come cheer time Ole Miss gets rowdy: “Are you ready? Hell yea! Damn right! Hotty Toddy, gosh almighty, who the hell are we? Hey! Flim flam, bim bam, OLE MISS BY DAMN!

collegechant3

University Of Alabama: "rammer Jammer Yellowhammer"

This sounds familiar... At the beginning and end of every game, Crimson Tide fans cheer: “Rammer Jammer Yellowhammer, give 'em hell, Alabama!” The relatively new chant has roots as far back as the '20s (Rammer Jammer was a campus magazine and the yellowhammer is the state's bird), but its cadence is supposedly adopted from Ole Miss's "Hotty Toddy."

collegechant4

University Of Tennessee: "rocky Top"

Less of a chant and more of a single-song concert series, "Rocky Top" (as in the Osborne Brothers' bluegrass song) has been on repeat during most games since the '70s.

collegechant6

Texas A&m University: Midnight Yell Practice

Texas A&M doesn’t have cheerleaders--it has yell leaders (five juniors and seniors elected by the student body). The night before each home game, the overall-clad crew assembles in Kyle Field Stadium to fire up tens of thousands of fans and teach them chants to use the following day.

hoya saxa

Georgetown University: "hoya Saxa"

These smarty-pants go as far as ancient Greece for their rally cry. It translates to "what rocks."

collegechant7

Oklahoma University: "boomer Sooner"

Named for Oklahoma’s Land Run of 1899, a constant back-and-forth chant rings out to get the crowd pumped up. If someone yells “Boomer,” the fans are expected to give a mighty “Sooner” in return.

collegechant10

University Of Pennsylvania: Toast Toss

After the third quarter of a home game, Penn fans sing “Drink a Highball,” but with the last verse, “Here’s a toast to dear ol’ Penn,” resulting in throwing actual toast upon the field. There’s even a “toast Zamboni” to collect the bread.

collegechant5

University Of Florida: Gator Chomp

As you might expect, the Gator Chomp is a clap (arms extended, then clamped down) resembling the school's mascot--set to the tune of intimidating Jaws-esque music.

collegechant8

Army Vs. Navy: "march On"

For over a century, the Cadets and Midshipmen have performed an impressive tradition known as “March On,” where students fall into rank on the field before being seated for the annual rivalry.

rockchalk1

University Of Kansas: "rock Chalk, Jayhawk, Ku!"

If you’re stumped on KU's cheer, it's a transposition of chalk rock (the limestone that's found on the campus's Mount Oread). It may be football season now, but we all know Big Jay is just chillin' till it's time for basketball.
