When we first started watching FireFly Lane, we immediately got some major Sweet Magnolias vibes (aside from the fact that SW centers around three friends and takes place in South Carolina). In the hit series, Maddie, Helen and Dana Sue team up to turn an old landmark into the spa of their dreams to distract from the fact that Maddie is going through a divorce. In addition to marriage, the show also touches upon themes like romance, family and, of course, friendship.
We obviously couldn’t forget this feel-good series about two women, Grace and Frankie, who bond after learning that their husbands have left them for each other...Naturally, their only solution is to move in together and become BFFs. Luckily, like Firefly Lane, the comedy, which has a total of six seasons, is currently available to stream on Netflix. And we’re not going to lie, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin might just give Heigl and Chalke a run for their money as our favorite TV pals.
If you’re like us and love Firefly Lane for its inclusion of retro throwbacks (and drama, of course), Little Fires Everywhere has a little bit of both. Based on Celeste Ng’s 2017 novel of the same name (which we also recommend), the Hulu miniseries centers around a mother-daughter duo who move to Ohio. Things get sticky after they meet one of their neighbors and her “perfect” family. One main difference between the two shows? LFE contains way more arson.

While the friendship between Firefly Lane’s Tully and Kate is deeply rooted in their childhood experiences, Dead to Me’s Jen and Judy have an incredible bond of their own. In this TV comedy starring Christina Applegate and Linda Cardinelli, two women form a friendship after meeting at a grief counseling session. However, it turns out their newfound relationship may not have been the result of mere coincidence after all.

Based on the book of the same name by Dhonielle Clayton and Sona Charaipotra, Tiny Pretty Things follows dancers who are enrolled at an elite ballet school. And they’ll stop at nothing to achieve their goal of becoming prima ballerina. We mainly included this one for those looking for something to match the more dramatic aspects of Firefly Lane.
10. Gilmore Girls
If we’re being honest, it might be hard to find a show with more female friendship at its core. Although Gilmore Girls centers around a mother-daughter duo, rather than childhood best friends, the relationships explored are just as, if not more, complex. Also a multi-generational story, the teen drama focuses on a variety of bonds between characters, including both family and romance. Oh, and there are seven seasons streaming so it’s the perfect binge.
When Miles “Pudge” Halter enrolls at Culver Creek Preparatory High School, he meets a complicated girl named Alaska, who helps him achieve his life-long dream of chasing the “Great Perhaps” (Renaissance writer François Rabelais’s famous last words). The storytelling is reminiscent of Firefly Lane because it teases what’s to come before backtracking to show what happened.
12. Girlfriends
Back in 2020, Netflix added seven Black sitcoms to its streaming slate, and luckily, Tracee Ellis Ross’s Girlfriends, was one of them. Like Heigl’s Firefly Lane, the show centers around friends “who challenge and support each other through life's triumphs and disasters.” In addition to Ross, the early 2000s sitcom also stars Golden Brooks, Persia White and Jill Marie Jones.
