A few milestones really jump out in my 18-year-old’s son’s life, like the day at 12 years old when he woke up at knowing everything about sports, or the day at 13 when he first asked a girl out (ah, puberty) and perhaps the most evocative. Or the day at 14 when he suddenly started wearing cologne.

The first two I anticipated, but the third—let’s call it the teen fragrance guy trend—caught me by surprise. He asked to borrow a couple of my unisex designer fragrances, would display them on his dresser and then, let’s be generous and say experiment with wearing the correct amount.

He’s not alone, according to staff at my local Sephora here in Los Angeles. Indeed, teen boys are wearing fragrance as a form of self-expression, a way to get quick gratification (it’s one of the things happening in a teenager’s brain)  and as a part of their nascent grooming habits (as NYU professor Scott Galloway counsels teens: “shower—young men aren’t showering”). And in my experience, it’s a way for young guys who maybe don’t feel all in on wearing makeup or maintaining a disciplined skincare regimen to be a part of the Sephora Kids trend and its promise of personal empowerment from cosmetics.

But what are the best fragrances for the high school dude set? I took into account surging hormones (boys love scents that mask their new body odor), socializing at stores (Sephora told me they have to keep an eye on kids dousing themselves in-store with especially popular brands) and the overall advice of social media influencers who test and recommend scents. I also just used my own nose for what I'd personally want to smell on my son. Here are my picks.

Best Sheer Fragrance

1. Montblanc Legend Spirit Eau de Toilette

Ulta

“Sexy, fresh, sweet, and I’m talking for men” is fragrancetok influencer Jeremy Fragrance’s summation of this scent, which he touts as his best fragrance for teenagers. The citrus and lavender help balance the cardamom and wood notes here, so as a mom, I approve of this drydown because it won’t leave you feeling like you’re trapped in a hot New York City elevator when you drive your son to school in the morning.

Best Bottle

2. Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male Elixir

Jean Paul Gaultier

Sales staff at my local Sephora confirmed what Reddit reports—this is the most popular fragrance to try on (one report says that staff has had to replace the tester bottle of Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male Elixir several times because groups of tweens keep stealing it). The little action figure-like gunmetal bottle (a nod to French sailor’s mariniere sweater, a signature of the designer) is appealing, as is the warm woodsy smell.

Social media influencer the cologne boy rates this fragrance highly, and the black-on-black bottle design is display-worthy. Woodsy, with notes of bergamot and patchouli, this scent comes in a refillable bottle.

Best for Fragrance Newbies

4. Maison Margiela ‘REPLICA' Mini Perfume Set

Maison Margiela

This set of five mini apothecary bottles is great for teens just beginning their interest in fragrance, since it contains multiple bestselling unisex designer fragrances. I like Jazz Club, a warm and woody cologne that is meant to smell like a Brooklyn, well, jazz club, if that scene was funky with pink pepper, tobacco leaf and vanilla. (It’s one of Aussie Youtuber FBFragrances’s top five fragrances for young men.) What’s also great about this collection is that it allows teens to see how their individual chemistry reacts with, say, the amber in one fragrance versus the citrus in another one—all in multiple sessions from their home, instead of loading up on too many scents at the local fragrance aisle of Sephora.

Best Designer Flex

5. Chanel Paris Deauville

Chanel

This is a personal favorite of my son’s since it’s the one he borrowed from me and he still steals it from time to time. Its eau de toilette formulation is sheer and it is a perfect light scent for summer, since it pairs citrus with green notes (in this case Sicilian orange with basil). What’s nice, too, about this fragrance is its relatively modest sillage—that’s the fragrance term for how long the scent lasts behind you as you move through a room. Unlike really musky and heavy fragrances, Chanel Deauville doesn’t overpower the room—a great attribute for a fragrance when young men are learning that six full spritzes are actually five too many.

Best All Around

6. Dior Sauvage Eau de Toilette

Dior

Sephora staff confirms that Dior Sauvage—America’s number one men’s fragrance—continues to be a crowd-pleaser with the tween and teen boys that come in after school. Bergamot and amberwood are combined in a formulation that’s more sheer than the stronger perfume version, which works for teen boys. And it lasts all day. Also, remember, teen boys are pack animals, and mostly don’t want to be called out for being too unusual. So if you’re gifting a scent, a small bottle of Dior Sauvage EDT is a bullseye. (Be sure to tell your teen Jeremy Fragrance is all in one this one too.)

Best Updated Classic

7. Aqua di Gio Parfum

Giorgio Armani

TikTok teen grooming influencer Noel Thomas admires the gradient black bottle of this fragrance, which is part of the bestselling Aqua de Gio line which debuted way back in 1996 and was inspired by designer Giorgio Armani’s vacation home on the Italian island of Pantelleria’s citrus groves and salty sea breezes. This iteration is new, with a drydown that’s got more spice and herbal notes (rosemary, clary sage) than the floral and fruit elements in the original scent.

Best Ultralight Scent

8. Bleu De Chanel After Shave Lotion

Chanel

This bestselling fragrance is beloved by all ages (think of it as “nouveau bougie Old Spice”) and my son’s friends like the aftershave version for its sheer, light scent. Since aftershaves have the the least concentrated oils of all fragrance categories, they evaporate the quickest and smell the least strong. So this watery citrus-amber blend isn’t going to overpower anyone, and makes a great entrée into the world of layering fragrances, in case teens want to experiment with that as their collection of scents grows.

Best Sweet Fragrance

9. Versace Eros Eau de Parfum

Versace

In a post entitled “Teenager getting into cologne?,” fragrance tester Darnell gives big ups for the first designer fragrance he ever purchased, which he describes as both fresh and sweet. There’s a lot of chatter on fragrancetok about sweet fragrances being catnip to the ladies, so dudes like these. (As a mom, I think teens equally want to smell like sugary treats because they love cookies, cakes and candies.) This is classified as a woody Oriental scent, so it’s a bit more complex than some other beginner scents. And it has top notes of mint oil and candied apple—what’s not to love?

best cologne for teen boys: Nautica Voyage box and bottle
Walmart

Top Affordable Option

10. Nautica Voyage

Nautica

From trusted sportswear brand Nautica comes this contemporary eau de toilette that smells of watery cucumber, green leaves and apple. It was first introduced in 2006, so it’s not the trendiest choice for a club kid-type of young lad, but if your guy is a little sporty, classic and doesn’t want to feel too pressured to smell all fancy, this is a great choice for him. TikTok reviewer Fragrance Joe sums this scent up by saying it’s a great “anytime, anywhere” cologne and says it’s one of the top three teenager scents.
