Flirting with nerdy this week

Happy December! The week and month begins with a new moon in Sagittarius on the 1st. Usually new moon weeks are quieter times as the moon eases into her new cycle, gaining light. But this new moon feels tense and restless.

Mercury is still retrograde, and on the 5th goes into the heart of the sun bringing a moment of clarity amidst the chaos. Though a long-term plan might be snapping into place under these transits, there’s still a lot of uncertainty. Neptune stations direct on the 7th hanging a heavy fog of confusion over the entire week.

On the 6th, action planet Mars stations retrograde in Leo. Mars retrograde periods often bring burnout and frustration, but are also an opportunity to plan for a break. Pushing forward isn’t always the answer, and from now until February 23rd, progress comes when we go back instead.

Love planet Venus enters Aquarius on the 7th. When Venus is in Aquarius, compatibility is less about practical needs and more about shared ideas. Flirting gets nerdy under these skies, and as Venus meets up with Pluto on the 7th, nerding out gets taken to the extreme.

Aries (March 21 - April 19)

Though class is canceled and travel plans are derailed, the new moon in Sagittarius on the 1st is for getting clear on your greater vision. Where do you want to go? Even if you can’t materially run away to Japan, what if you could mentally? Your ruling planet Mars stations retrograde on the 6th forcing you to slow down and revisit a former crush or creative passion. Let desire be your guide.

This week’s mantra: “Eros.”

Cheeky illustration of a young non-binary person petting a bull.

Taurus (April 20 - May 20)

This week finds you in a deep push-pull between family obligations and work opportunities, and at the new moon in Sagittarius on the 1st, something has to give. This new moon is for clearing toxic dynamics and setting energetic boundaries. You show up better for others when you’re enthusiastically taking care of yourself. It feels scary to invest so much in self care, but it’s foolish to keep suppressing your power.

This week’s mantra: “Lift.”

Cheeky illustration of identical twins with long dark hair and a statement earrings back-to-back, smirking at each other.

Gemini (May 21 - June 20)

For many reasons, you’ve had to protect your heart this year. Whether single or partnered, you’ve been hesitant to open up to new people, focused instead on discovering yourself. The new moon in Sagittarius on the 1st marks a turning point in your capacity to love. A sweet message from a friend or lover on the 5th reminds you that you don’t have to do it alone. You’re ready for a new connection.

This week’s mantra: “Heart.”

Cancer (June 21 - July 22)

The new moon in Sagittarius on the 1st is a critical moment to set intentions for your health and wellbeing. So much of your growth over the past year has been spiritual but because you’re not experiencing material results, you keep pushing your body harder than necessary. Instead of fighting so hard to prove yourself, take this moment as an opportunity to be radically gentle. Step by step. One day at a time.

This week’s mantra: “Soft.”

Cheeky illustration of a woman of Asian-descent wearing a sheer coral top with her hair half-up in pigtail puns, the rest down. She is hugging a lion, who is smirking.

Leo (July 23 - August 22)

The new moon in Sagittarius on the 1st is a breaking point for the part of you that’s long felt like you’re not having any fun. It’s time to set intentions for your creative and romantic life. Yes, it’s expensive to go out and pursue joy. But connecting with your network is also the easiest path to making your dreams come true. Instead of viewing it as “too expensive,” think of it as an investment.

This week’s mantra: “Collect.”

Cheeky illustration with a light blue background of a woman wearing a coral shirt coyly poking out from behind her hands.

Virgo (August 23 - September 23)

The new moon in Sagittarius on the 1st brings a humbling realization around your home and family life. If you’re feeling frustrated by your living situation or disappointed in a family member, let yourself have all the big feelings about it. At the same time, don’t let those feelings get in the way of the other career and relationship opportunities that have been inspiring you. How can you honor your roots without getting stuck in the past?

This week’s mantra: “Uproot.”

Libra (September 23 - October 21)

The new moon in Sagittarius on the 1st brings clarity to a nagging issue in your day to day. New moons are fresh starts but for you, this is also a firm ending. With your ruling planet Venus moving into your creativity sector on the 7th, you’re ready to find a new crush or artistic obsession. Who says you have to burn yourself out? Romanticize your life instead: light some candles and cook yourself a fancy dinner.

This week’s mantra: “Muse.”

680x400 Scorpio@2x

Scorpio (October 22 - November 21)

The new moon in Sagittarius on the 1st falls in your money sector and brings a reality check around your budgeting—seasonal or otherwise. Though you’ve found ways to reduce your expenses, you’re also denying yourself the things you really love. This has caused you to “revenge spend” and kept you in a cycle of being broke. It might feel embarrassing to talk about this outside of your close circle, but sharing your struggles with money more widely could help you find a solution.

This week’s mantra: “Acknowledge.”

Cheeky illustration of a Black woman with purple hair on an orange background. She's in a wearing jean jacket, with a quiver strapped across her back and arrows sticking out.

Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21)

The new moon in Sagittarius on the 1st is in your sign. Usually this would be “new moon, new you” energy. But with Mercury still retrograde (and also in your sign), this is more like “new moon, old you!” energy. You’re spending the week deep in style nostalgia mode: cleaning out your closet and looking through old photos for hair and makeup inspiration. Though you don’t want to get stuck in the past, it’s important to give it a proper sendoff. Let next year’s style take inspiration from a trend of the past.

This week’s mantra: “Review.”

A cheeky image of a woman of color with dark hair holding a pink goat by the horns. The background is pink and her shirt is darker pink.

Capricorn (December 22 - January 19)

The new moon in Sagittarius on the 1st is your annual opportunity to take a day for yourself. Put your phone on Do Not Disturb. Book an acupuncture appointment. Let yourself get productively lost.  It’s easy to feel guilty about all the work you have piling up. But you don’t have to do it all. Give 70% rather than 110%. Let someone else pick up the slack. You deserve a break.

This week’s mantra: “Ease.”

Cheeky image of a Black woman with blue hair on a light blue background. She's holding blue water in her palms, which is bubbling up and taking shape as her hair.

Aquarius (January 20 - February 18)

The new moon in Sagittarius on the 1st is an opportunity to go back to the drawing board. A long-term goal that you thought would carry you into next year has quickly become unsustainable. Rather than sulking in frustration, take this week to air your grievances and then move on to the next thing. Sweet Venus enters your sign on the 7th, a wonderful influence for enhancing your beauty and boosting your health. The best is yet to come.

This week’s mantra: “Bloom.”

Cheeky illustration of a gender-fluid white person with short-cropped orange hair. They're wearing a light blue halter top as two bright pink koi fish circle their head.

Pisces (February 19 - March 20)

The new moon in Sagittarius on the 1st is a chance to set realistic expectations for your career and public image. This isn’t about giving up on a goal, but about setting yourself up for success with a practical plan. It’s easy for you to get caught up in the big picture and then space out on deadlines and immediate opportunities. Your best ideas come to you in unexpected bursts this week. Give yourself the space to dream.

This week’s mantra: “Real.”
