Kate Middleton turned 43 this week. Not only did she receive a special shout-out from her husband, Prince William, but she also was honored on social media by the royal family. I was so distracted by the onslaught of well-wishes that I nearly missed another royal birthday.
This week, Queen Mary of Denmark celebrated her twins’ 14th birthday by sharing never-before-seen photos on Instagram.
The first photo shows the twins posing in front of a grand staircase, and it's followed by individual portraits of the teenagers. Prince Vincent is wearing a classic black tux, while his sister is rocking a sparkly dress. Princess Josephine completed her look with a gold necklace and hoop earrings.
The translated caption reads, “Their Royal Highnesses Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine have a birthday and turn 14 today [Denmark flag emoji].”
It continued, “On the occasion of the birthday, new pictures of the Prince and Princess are published. The birthday pictures were taken on New Year's Eve—shortly after the father of the birthday boy had given his first New Year’s speech.”
The caption was referring to King Frederik’s New Year’s speech. Although it’s an annual tradition, it was his first time delivering the message since his mother, Queen Margrethe II, abdicated the throne.
“My first New Year speech. It won’t happen twice, but I’ll never forget it,” he said, according to The Local. “People say that ‘a good start is half the job done’. Perhaps that’s going a little too far, but Mary and I couldn’t have wished for a better start as the royal couple. We are looking forward to everything the new year will bring, and most of all to being together. With each other and with all of you.”
