Attention royal aficionados: King Charles III is postponing all upcoming engagements after being diagnosed with cancer.
Today, Buckingham Palace released a statement announcing that the 75-year-old monarch is undergoing treatment to address an issue that was identified during his recent hospitalization. The team didn’t specify the type of cancer that King Charles has been diagnosed with, but they noted it’s a “separate issue” from his enlarged prostate.
The palace announced the news on Instagram, writing, “During The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer.”
Although King Charles is postponing all public engagements, he will continue his duties behind the scenes. “His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties,” the statement continued. “Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual.”
Buckingham Palace also thanked the team of doctors and nurses who identified the cancer in a timely manner. “The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure,” they wrote. “He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible.”
The statement concluded with a special note to debunk speculation and raise awareness about the diagnosis. “His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer,” it read.
