‘Sweet Magnolias’ Star JoAnna Garcia Swisher Has Some Bad News for Maddie & Cal Fans

JoAnna Garcia Swisher has some bad news for Sweet Magnolias fans who are rooting for Maddie and Cal in the upcoming episodes.

PureWow recently sat down for an exclusive interview with the 41-year-old actress, who shared brand-new details about Sweet Magnolias season two. When asked about her character Maddie’s love interest, Cal (played by Justin Bruening), Swisher teased a potential on-again, off-again relationship.  

“From what I understand, they will end up together at the end,” she told PureWow. “But I think that there’s going to be a little bit of a rocky road there.”

While “it doesn’t get much better than Cal,” Swisher confirmed that Maddie was supposed to get a new love interest in season two. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, anything is possible.

“Pre-COVID, I would have thought she’d get a new love interest, but I don’t know,” she explained. “They’ll probably try to keep things as simple as possible. But I mean, Maddie should have a little fun before she settles down again, right?” Amen to that.

Although she hasn’t received the scripts, Swisher assured fans that season two will be even more intense than the first installment.

“It’s going to be very dramatic and super extra,” she continued. “There’s going to be a lot of juiciness in season two—more so than the first season. I don’t know if I should be excited or nervous, but I’m kind of all of the above.”

As for timing, Netflix hasn’t announced an official premiere date for Sweet Magnolias season two. Still, Swisher revealed that it’ll be here before we know it. “I know that the goal is to get back as soon as we can, so we will not be waiting a minute,” she said.
