Zoe Saldaña is the woman of the hour, and proved that once again while walking down the red carpet for the 97th Annual Academy Awards. Heavily predicted to be the front runner for “Best Supporting Actress,” it turns out she participated in a trend that was super popular earlier this year at the Golden Globes. That trend, you ask? Why none other than elbow-length black gloves, which were seen on the likes of Ali Wong, Kerry Washington, Janelle James, Pamela Anderson and more during the Globes.

Black Opera Gloves are Back in Action

Saldaña’s performance in Emilia Pérez has been lauded by critics, and upon winning the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture at the Golden Globes earlier this year, I watched the film for the first time to see if this is, indeed, Saldaña’s best performance. In it, Saldaña plays a lawyer contacted by a Mexican cartel leader with the hopes of transitioning to a woman. Along the way, there are tons of original songs and glamorous dance numbers as the former kingpin goes through the process of completing the procedure, and successfully begins a new life as Emilia Pérez.

“As a longtime fan, I’ve seen Saldaña in a number of projects that showcase her emotional depth and toughness (Colombiana and Special Ops: Lioness and her performance as Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy, to name a few), but Emilia Pérez just might be her best—enough to rightfully garner what I believe should be her first Oscar nomination and win,” I wrote in my review.
Also participating in the trend was Scarlett Johansson, who wore a pair of sleek elbow-length black finger gloves, which she teamed with a fitted black gown, very much channeling the 1940s, ‘50s and ‘60s with an Audrey Hepburn-ish look (Breakfast at Tiffany's anyone?).

Old Hollywood elbow-length gloves are very tricky to pull off on the red carpet,” PureWow fashion editor, Abby Hepworth, wrote during the Golden Globes. She added, “I think if you go totally classic it can look really elegant—Janelle James aced it. But doing a dark black glove with a lighter color dress too often just ends up looking like an afterthought, it doesn't look cohesive. Pam Anderson also made it work."
As usual, Hepworth was right on the money.
