My Favorite Royal Photo of 2024 Doesn't Include Kate Middleton—But It Was Taken By Her

It's giving pure joy

To say 2024 was an eventful year is the ultimate understatement—especially when it comes to the British royal family.

The year began with the world wondering about Kate Middleton's 'disappearance,' it gave us a wild PhotoShop debacle and it ended with Princess Anne being named the hardest working royal (yet again).

Along the way, the royal fam posted and posed for numerous photos. And while there were some super striking portraits (especially of King Charles and Prince William), one image stood out as my favorite of 2024. No, it doesn't include Princess Catherine, but it was taken by her.

The gorgeous, joy-filled photo in question was posted on the Kensington Palace social media accounts on June 21 in honor of Prince William's 42nd birthday.

In the image, Prince William is jumping in the air while holding hands with his three kids, Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6. The post was captioned, "Happy birthday Papa, we all love you so much," and was personally signed by Princess Catherine, 42, with her initial, "C." It gave photographer credit to the Princess of Wales as well.

Why is this my favorite royal photo of the year?

Well, 2024 was a difficult one for the family, particularly with both King Charles, 76, and Princess Catherine being diagnosed with cancer. In addition, Princess Anne, 74, faced a major injury, Queen Camilla, 77, was ill for quite some time and Prince Andrew, 64, well, you know.

This image features none of the hardship and negativity of the year. It is pure positivity and joy, with a nod to the future (it features not one but two future monarchs). It's hard to look at it and not smile at the family united and having the time of their lives. The fact that Princess Catherine took the pic is just icing on the cake.

And I'm clearly not the only person who loved the photo. It received a whopping 1.8 million likes (including from some famous faces like Jennifer Garner).

Here's to the royals—and all of us—carrying that joy into 2025.
