And Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2023 Is…

The verdict is in! Mere weeks before the beginning of 2023, Pantone has already revealed the Color of the Year, and this time, it's....*drumroll please*... Viva Magenta!

On the official website, this bold color, which Pantone defines as a "nuanced crimson red tone that presents a balance between warm and cool," is said to be a fearless shade that "pulsates, and whose exuberance promotes optimism and joy." It's also described as a color that encourages "experimentation and self-expression without restraint."

Other terms that Pantone used to describe their selection include electrifying, boundaryless, inclusive and empowering. If you ask us, it sounds like Pantone is already setting the tone for a powerful and transformative new year with this vibrant, unconventional shade.

Leatrice Eiseman, the executive director at Pantone Color Institute, said in a statement, "In this age of technology, we look to draw inspiration from nature and what is real. Viva Magenta descends from the red family, and is inspired by the red of cochineal, one of the most precious dyes belonging to the natural dye family as well as one of the strongest and brightest the world has known."

She continued, "Rooted in the primordial, Viva Magenta reconnects us to original matter. Invoking the forces of nature, Viva Magenta galvanizes our spirit, helping us to build our inner strength."

This year's selection is quite the change from last year's choice, which was Very Peri—a periwinkle blue with violet-red undertones. At the time, Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute, said, “The Pantone Color of the Year reflects what is taking place in our global culture, expressing what people are looking for that color can hope to answer. As society continues to recognize color as a critical form of communication and as a way to express and affect ideas and emotions and engage and connect, the complexity of this new red-violet-infused blue hue highlights the expansive possibilities that lie before us.”

Judging by their most recent pick, 2023 is already shaping up to be one exciting year.
