If you’re reading this article, it’s probably because you have two goals in mind: 1) finding a comfortable chair on a swivel that won’t squeak or get stuck and 2) making sure it actually looks good. We gotcha. This year seems to be all about the statement seat, where cozy and comfortable accent chairs are every chic room’s secret weapon. More specifically, swivel chairs in chunky fabric or leather finishes that skew somewhere between English country and rustic contemporary (read: New England eclectic). While some swivels—like more narrow chairs with clean-lined silhouettes—are better for offices or dining rooms, others, like oversized swivels in bold fabrics, can make for a stunning statement piece in the living room or bedroom. So, from ergonomic reading chairs to leather accent chairs and recliners (as in, ones that look as good as they feel), here are the 10 best swivel chairs of 2024.

How We Chose the Best Swivel Chairs

At the bottom of this article, you can find a breakdown of what to consider when choosing a swivel chair (and how to pick one that’s safe for hardwood floors). We took these factors into consideration when curating this list, mainly focusing on chairs that had a) a 360-degree rotation with a ball-bearing swivel base, b) foam-, fiber- or down-filled cushions that were supportive and sinkable and c) multiple fabrics or customization options.

1. Maiden Home The Dune Chair

What We Like

  • performance fabrics with multiple color options
  • durable high-resiliency cushions
  • removable and machine-washable slipcovers
  • option to add/remove the swivel mechanism

What We Don't Like

Maiden Home

After seeing the beach-dreamy sofa version of this chair—specifically its ultra-comfy construction—we knew the Dune would need to be at the top of our list here. The slipcovered design has clean lines and flange seams for a relaxed vibe, and it comes with tons of customizations that keep comfort just as high-priority as the aesthetics. Beyond picking your favorite color and fabric, you have two depth options (32- or 37-inch) and the choice to add/remove the swivel option. More importantly, the cushions feature a high-resiliency core wrapped in down, feathers and fiber, providing a cloud-like, sink-in feel—and each one is individually channeled to resist sagging over time. The best part? Each slipcover is hand-sewn with Performance fabric (i.e., stain- and spill-resistant) and it’s fully removable/machine washable.

Take it from one reviewer, who raves, “I've never had slipcovered furniture before, and I was worried that the slipcovers would look sloppy and rumpled. They do not. They are well-fitted, smooth, and stay in place. They are tailored nicely. Then, I was worried that the narrow arms and the seam on the arm would be uncomfortable. They are not. The inside edge of the arm is well padded (a little less so on the outside edge, but not noticeable), and the seam is pliable and soft. We use the arms all the time, including sinking in and slinging our legs over them while watching TV. Finally, I was concerned that the Dune[‘s] cloud-like pillows would need constant fluffing and tending. They don't. I fluff or flip mine maybe twice a month. I'm not into products that make me work for them.” They also mention: “The cream upholstery (Oyster) has not been a problem at all. After six months of daily use with teens and cats in the house, they don't look grungy. We have not needed to wash them yet, but it was essential to have that option.”

If you’re looking 2024’s answer to the viral Huggy swivel chair, you’ve found it. It’s no secret that oversized leather items have been trending —and this chair takes customization to an entirely new level. First, you have the choice of eight leather finishes that range from midnight blue and nightfall black to timeless cognac brown (there’s also a slipcovered version of the chair available). Yet, what truly makes this guy unique is that you can choose between two fills: standard down blend—a multi-layer foam base with a rounded down blend top—or down alternative, which has a firmer, more supportive sit that requires minimal cushion fluffing (for an extra $100). The chair's hidden base features a steel ball-bearing mechanism for a smooth, 360-degree swivel and the standard 22-inch seat depth can be extended to an extra-deep 27 inches, if you choose the larger size.

“This [chair] is stylish with a classic/vintage and modern look all twisted into one. You do feel a little naked with the low arms at first, but you quickly love the change from the normally high arms you get with most [chairs]. We wanted one we would never have to fluff so we went with the down alternative, we love the support it gives us, and holds up to our kids climbing all over the back cushions constantly,” one reviewer writes.

Best of all, the swivel is engineered to be lightweight and easy to move around on hardwood floors (making it fairly scratch-resistant). Oh, and it arrives fully assembled and ready to sit in.

One reviewer writes: “I love so many things about these chairs. They are perfect for the room, in size, style, and color. They are very comfortable, and I like the way they swivel. The fabric is thick and nice and looks like a quality linen. There [are] light grey and darker grey threads, which gives it a rich dimensional look.” Plus, another person adds: “Deep and wide enough that I can snuggle my kids on them…my husband is 6-foot-3 and is very comfortable in these!”

That’s why we love this number from Crate & Barrel that combines plush cushions with a swoon-worthy design. First, you have the overstuffed cushions, filled with polyfoam, that are unlike anything else on the market (when it comes to desk chairs). Plus, another adds: “Love the fabric, love the aesthetic, highly recommend a cushion for back support! The seat is deep and doesn't cover the full back. cushion makes a difference.”

That said, it’s also worth noting one reviewer’s warning: “It's very comfortable and feels like sitting on a cushioned chair rather than a typical office chair. My only complaint is that if you wear dark blue jeans, the dye will stain the chair a bit.”

It’s a recliner and a swivel chair. Take it from new mother Linsy, who’s using the chair in her nursery: “This recliner is hands down my most cherished piece of furniture and most used. Not only does it look gorgeous in our space (unlike typical recliners), but it's designed in a supportive manner for breastfeeding. I love that I can easily recline without waking my daughter post-feed and relax comfortably for hours on end. What to Consider When Buying a Swivel Chair

There are many factors to account for when you’re buying a specific type of chair—especially when it comes to comfortable accent chairs. For swivels, however, it’s important to keep the following in mind:

  • Location: Where you’re putting your swivel chair will have a lot to do with size and style. Is it for your home office, workspace, gaming setup, living room, dining area? If it’s going somewhere for lounging—like a reading nook or living room—you’ll want something extra cushy with enough room to curl your legs up. Otherwise, if it’s somewhere with food (or baby spitup) involved, you’re going to want to opt for something with a performance fabric. And of course, if it’s for the office, you’ll want to go with something ergonomic, especially if you'll be sitting in the chair for extended periods.
  • Swivel Mechanism: You want to ensure the swivel mechanism's quality and smoothness. Typically, standard swivels provide 360-degree rotation and are suitable for various chairs, while tilt swivels offer added comfort with a rocking motion. The highest-quality swivel you want to look for is a ball-bearing swivel base, which are known for durability and smooth movement. Swivels with locks are also useful for stability, and those with height adjustment are ideal for office chairs. Either way, however, you want to avoid chairs with cheap or noisy swivels that may wear out quickly. Be sure to choose a swivel type that complements where it’s going, like a rocking swivel for a nursery glider or return swivel for an office chair.
  • Adjustability: As mentioned before, you want to pay attention to the chair’s adjustability features—especially if it’s going into an office. Look for options like height adjustment, tilt control, armrest adjustments, and reclining capabilities to customize your seating options. Plus, if it’s going somewhere that emphasizes comfort, you’ll want to consider something that includes a footrest or matching ottoman.
  • Mobility: If you need a swivel that can move easily on different floor types, consider one with smooth-rolling casters or wheels. Just be sure the wheels are appropriate for your flooring, whether it's carpet, hardwood or tile.

Do Swivel Chairs Scratch Wood Floors?

You spent a lot on your hardwood floors (and you’re not about to ruin them with a swivel chair). Here are a few things you can do to protect them: First, opt for chairs with soft rubber or polyurethane caster wheels instead of hard materials that are more likely to cause damage. Then, you might want to consider adding chair mats or floor protectors beneath the swivel base to provide a smooth surface for rolling while shielding the floor from scratches. If you do this, however, remember to regularly clean the floor by removing dirt and debris that can become abrasive when caught under the chair's casters. The easiest choice is to use glides instead of casters for stationary chairs, however, where these reduce the most risk when it comes to floor damage.
