How to Improvise a Pastry Brush When You're Baking

Works for basting, too

OK, you’re almost ready to pop that pie into the oven (nice crust work). All you need to do is brush it with a little egg washand… Oh wait, you don’t actually own a pastry brush. Well, no brush, no problem. Here, a simple substitute that you can make at home.

What you need: A roll of parchment paper and a pair of scissors.

Step 1: Tear off a ten-inch-long piece of parchment paper and fold it over into a rectangle. Fold it once more to make a smaller rectangle.

Step 2: Holding the paper at the fold, snip into the other side to create your bristles. Cut vertical strips that stop about half an inch away from the fold (you don’t want to end up with a pile of shreds).

Step 3: Run your fingers across the newly cut bristles to fan them out a bit before taking them to the baked good at hand.

And there you have it—your very own makeshift pastry brush. Admire your handiwork and then get your pie in the oven.
