Love ‘em or hate ‘em, bras are a fact of life. We start off with training bras around middle school (even when we don’t need them), work our way up to push-up bras that we hide from our moms and then, somewhere along the way, embrace a good ‘ole plain and comfortable bra—that is, if you can find one. I can almost hear the collective sigh of relief from women all over the world unhooking their bra clip after a long day. Is there a better feeling? To answer my own rhetorical question, I didn’t think there was, but that’s before I met the $60 Soma Vanishing Unlined Perfect Coverage bra—a revolutionary unlined bra with hidden underwire, no-show cups and smoothing technology. Intrigued by the four-way stretch and so-called ‘perfect, comfy’ fit and long overdue to replace my current bra, I needed to know if Soma’s Vanishing bra lived up to the hype, so I asked my fellow editors to wear-test it with me. Here’s how it went.

How I Tested the Soma Vanishing Unlined Perfect Coverage Bra

While I’ve tested my fair share of clothing items, from jeans and shorts to blazers and even ski suits, I really wanted to include PureWow editors with different bra sizes, boob shapes and preferences when it came to testing out the Soma bra. After all, bras may arguably be one of the most difficult pieces to buy online. Over the course of multiple days and (for some of us) weeks, we spent hours on end running errands, going to the office, attending movie screenings in the park, brunching, visiting museums and other various day-to-day activities all while wearing the Soma bra. Oh, and did I mention that the weather was extremely hot (near 100 degrees Fahrenheit) here in Los Angeles and disgustingly sticky with humidity in New York City? We each ordered our true bra size and opted for shades that closely matched our skin tones to determine if vanishing really means vanishing. Spoiler: It does.

“I'm not joking, this might be the softest bra I've ever owned. The material feels like silk, which made it super comfortable to wear for a long period of time,” says PureWow Beauty and Cultures Editor Chelsea Candelario. “As soon as I put it on, I noticed a difference from my other bras. It provided great coverage and kept the girls up without the underwire or straps pinching my skin. The bra shaped me so well that it had me second guessing if I've been wearing the wrong bras this whole time. Overall, I think it's a great bra for daily wear *and* to feel sexy (due to it pushing up my boobs without overflowing).”

When I asked Candelario about the bra’s standout feature, she told me, “I just appreciate the size inclusion. I love that there are extensive choices for big boobs, and I was able to find one that fits perfectly without extra room or feeling tight. The nude color choices are also a nice bonus, too.” She even enjoyed how it lives up to its name (i.e., vanishing), saying, “I didn't truly believe [that it vanishes] until I tried on my other bra and saw the difference. It's going to make wearing lighter shirts so much easier.”

“I'm consistently a 36C, but even some other underwear brands I wear can run too big or too small. This was great! I thought the sizing and fit was perfect,” says PureWow Senior Commerce Editor Stephanie Maida. “There's no gapping at the top of the cups either, it hugs the gals just right and does make me feel confident and sexy—no frills required. I LOVE that the back band is thicker on the sides to totally smooth out the back and prevent any awkward squeezing or lumpiness; it lays so nicely against the skin and makes the bra very comfortable. I also like how adjustable the straps are, and that you can adjust them from the front while you're wearing it. The fabric feels silky smooth and soft, yet totally sturdy.

To test how ‘vanishing’ it is, Maida wore this bra under a quite thin and form-fitting Skims T-shirt bodysuit, as well as a silky T-shirt. She says, “The Skims bodysuit is pretty unforgiving with undergarments, so although the outline of the Soma was visible beneath it, it did look much smoother compared to other bras. When worn beneath a bit of a thicker, though still clingy T-shirt, the Soma did do a better job at disappearing. I will say that a bit of nip comes through the cups, but so far that hasn't been visible under clothes.”

Maida adds that she’s worn the bra on hot NYC days, during which she did a lot of walking. “Typically, this experience would leave my underbust chafed, itchy, red and irritated. Not so with this Soma. When I took it off at the end of the day, the area was smooth and undisturbed. There's been no uncomfortable rubbing or chafing, and no need for constant adjustments. In fact, I don't think about it at all while I'm wearing it—which is a huge pro for a bra. Even if it doesn't ‘vanish’ completely under a Skims bodysuit, it definitely vanishes from my mind—it really is so comfy that I forget that I'm wearing it!”

Tester Marissa Wu, associate SEO editor at PureWow, braved the humid NYC jungle for three days in the Soma bra with a bit of skepticism at first glance. “When I unpacked it, I was a little concerned as the front-facing lining of the cups was a little wrinkly, and I had no idea how it would be a disappearing bra,” she admits. “But it's overall a nice, simple look. Not super snazzy or fancy-looking, but…I feel confident [in it] because I feel comfortable.”

Wu adds, “It's super soft! And there's not a lot of stitching or lining—literally seamless. It doesn't dig into your skin and feels quite light. You forget it's there. I also noticed that it *feels* less sticky and sweaty on hot days than other bras I've worn, [and] it doesn't leave any marks. Honestly might be my favorite bra in my drawer right now.”

And even though the straps are thinner than other bras she’s worn, she assures me that they're quite comfortable. “The entire bra is just weightless; you can't feel it on your body at all, which is a nice, novel sensation. The underwire doesn't dig in or rub. Magic!”

I’ve been quite vocal about my aversion to bras in the past (don’t get me started on strapless bras), finding some reprieve from the discomfort and rib suffocation with the Nartori Feathers bra, but when I tried Soma’s newest addition to their bra line-up, I practically choked on my own words. Turns out, I don’t hate bras—at least not this one—I just never found one that fit me like a glove. Echoing what my colleagues said above, this is the comfiest bra I’ve ever worn in my *life,* so much so that I forget that I’m wearing anything at all.

I, like Wu, felt apprehensive upon first wear, seeing how the seamless cups had some wrinkles and divets in the linings, but like magic, these concerns went Houdini on me as I clipped it on. (Note: You can see a slight outline of the bra through my white, semi-sheer tank top but this is largely due to the thin material of the shirt and the not-so-perfect color match to my skin tone.) Yes, it may be a basic bra without the frills of a lacey overlay or sexy fit of balconette finish, but when all is said and done, a basic bra I can wear every day is way more important to me than lingerie. And if you can manage to make that sexy, which Soma has done, well that’s pretty dang impressive in my book. My confidence level is through the roof every time I put this on, and I even find myself wanting to stand up straighter because of how well it fits. It's just wild to me that something so flimsy, unpadded and shapeless off my body can be so supportive, secure and shaping on my body. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I don’t want to take it off!

Final Thoughts on the Soma Vanishing Unlined Perfect Coverage Bra

What I Like

  • built-in petals to disguise your nipples
  • unlined cups and soft material are unbelievably comfortably
  • disappears under clothes and from your mind

What I Don't Like

  • flimsy fabric shows wrinkles easily

Soma

Suffice it to say, Soma’s new Vanishing bra has PureWow editors of all boob shapes, colors and sizes stunned. After putting the unlined bra to the test for weeks through various climates and activities, all the editors found the no-show unlined cups to be unbelievably comfortable, disappearing beneath blouses and from our minds. It’s designed with a discreet petal built-in to disguise your nipples, which both Maida and I appreciated while testing, and it features the brand’s patented smoothing in the back, giving it that seamless quality. Its comfort is unmatched, it’s smoothing, it’s supportive and it’s $60. In my opinion, that’s a reasonable price for something I wear every day.
