Anyone else still thinking about Meghan Markle’s sartorial excellence during her whirlwind tour of Colombia with Prince Harry this past week? I certainly am. When I consider the range of attire she busted out—from elevating beloved brands like Veronica Beard to showcasing Colombian designers like Johanna Ortiz—there’s a singular style swap I’m most intrigued by: The way she mixed in multiple midi skirts (like the Emma Pencil Skirt from Posse, $250) in place of the more obvious choice to wear jeans.

Think of it this way: Meghan wore not one, not two, not three, but a whopping four different midi skirts during this four-day trip to meet with Colombia’s Vice President Francia Márquez and, alongside Harry, promote their recent efforts to create digital safeguards online for kids. She wore a sequined number—made by the Colombian designer Silvia Tcherassi—with a sleeveless cotton shirt from Mango, $46; $26; another midi skirt, which featured a green chintz pattern from Colombian designer Juan de Dios, was paired with a Giuliva Heritage ‘Husband’ button-down shirt, $988. (Two additional midi styles, the aforementioned design from Posse and another one from Juan de Dios, were also worn.)
Still, here’s the part I was taking notes on: Each one of Meghan’s tops—from a basic T-shirt to this shell from Argent, $145—could just as easily been worn with jeans. But that simple swap to pair them with a midi skirt gave the look a little something extra, not to mention professionalism and polish for fall.
So, how can you mirror her style? Well, to start, you can select a classic neutral shirt from your closet. Now, the fun part—finding a chic midi to pair with it. See below are a range of fall-ready options to try.
Posse
Meghan paired this exact midi skirt with a white shell from Argent—and both are still in stock.
Sézane
It’s not the same as her Silvia Tcherassi number, but the sequins still help this skirt deliver a pop.
3. Veronica Beard Arwen Cotton Skirt
Veronica Beard
Just like Meghan’s Juan de Dios midi, this skirt delivers on visual interest—and would look so lovely for fall.
Back to Meghan and her midis: Perhaps the secret to her success with this style combo comes down to the rule of thirds. But I think it also has to do with making such a simple style upgrade. Yes, denim is still a perfect match for a crisp white top like a button-down, but adding a new silhouette like a midi skirt is, quite frankly, interesting. It’s also one of the top additions I’ll be making to my closet this season.
