I do not use the term “It bag” with abandon. To earn the title, an item must be instantly recognizable. It must be truly prolific, you simply can’t escape it. And it also must be attainable—the suede Margaux tote from The Row may be highly covetable, even earning comparisons to the Hermés Birkin, but its $5,000 price tag isn’t exactly realistic for the vast majority of us to buy. There is, however, one style I am more than willing to bestow with the title of “It bag” of 2025, despite the fact that it’s only February—that is, of course the Longchamp Le Pliage bag.
Fashion Editor POV: This Is the *It* Bag of 2025
I’m calling it now

The iconic Longchamp Le Pliage line first launched in 1993 with a Nylon tote that could be folded up to a fraction of its full size for easy, lightweight storage. In fact, I distinctly remember being incredibly envious of my oldest sister and her friends, almost all of whom had their very own Le Pliage totes in a range of color, some even with their initials embossed on the leather flap.
It could be credited to the current ‘90s/Y2K revival or to a post-pandemic craving for practical-yet-chic wardrobe staples, but whatever the reason, Longchamp Le Pliage designs have been popping up literally everywhere I look—my Instagram, TikTok and Pinterest feeds, on the arms of fellow fashion editors and influencers at industry events, slung on the shoulders of women of all ages and sense of style on the NYC subway and more. And it’s not just the OG Nylon tote I’m spying, but leather and mini designs too. In fact, the Xtra XS leather style ($505) may just be the best bang for your buck if you’re looking to add a Longchamp cutie to your collection.

The Xtra XS handbag is a petite version of the iconic tote, with the same signature leather handles and top flat, this time zhuzhed up with a leather base as well, instead of classic Nylon. It also comes with a matching adjustable leather strap that can be clipped on or off to fit your vibe. As a mini bag devotee, I have to admit it’s one of the best I’ve ever carried.
The size strikes that Goldilocks point between having ample room for all my essentials (without needing to play a careful game or organizational Tetris to make everything fit) while still looking and feeling petite. And I love that the top closes with both a zipper and a snapped leather flap, giving me the option to securely sequester everything away or leave the inner pocket more accessible without being fully open. And the fact that it’s made of leather gives the whole bag a bit more structure and form than the Nylon or canvas designs.
As multiple street style star have demonstrated, the Longchamp Le Pliage bags are also the ideal designs to showcase trendy bag charms. Many styles, including the Xtra XS have metal loops (designed for attaching the crossbody strap) that are great for hooking on keychains, beaded loops and other cheeky bag charms. The leather loop handles are also thin enough to accommodate most keychains, but still feel sturdy in your hands.

While my love for minis runs deep, you shouldn’t discount the OG large tote ($155), now made with recycled canvas. I’ve owned my Nylon Le Pliage tote since college and it’s held up phenomenally well, I must say. The material has a few spots here and there, but nothing all that noticeable, and the leather is wearing extremely well. You can tell this bag is not new, but in the best way imaginable.
It has so much room to handily fit everything you might need for a day out and about. In addition to the basics (keys, phone, wallet) I’ve also loaded it up with my laptop, a book, a Tupperware lunch, noise cancelling headphones and a pouch of makeup for touchups throughout the day…and still had room for more. That said, I would avoid overstuffing your tote with too many heavy items. The thin straps tend to uncomfortably dig into my shoulders if I’ve overdone it, and I’ve had friends prone to overstuffing complain that the stitching where the straps are anchored was starting to come loose.
Whatever style you choose (and there are a lot to sift through), the Longchamp Le Pliage bags are everything an It bag should be, with the added bonus that they’ll never go out of style, even after the current hype dies down in favor of the next must-have item. Trust me, this is one piece you won’t regret. Now the only thing left to do is decide which color to snap up first…
