I must admit, I vehemently despise sandals. Why, you ask? Well, besides the fact that I was (and still am) teased for my hook-like pinky toes, there’s always been something vile to me about the act of flipping and flopping in semi bare feet, collecting dirt. Anyways, I can never find a cute sandal...and you won’t catch me ever wearing crocs.
I cannot be the only person who spends hours scouring sites and stores in hopes that I’ll stumble across something cute and new and, dare I say, reasonably priced, to pop up and scream, “Buy me!” In this economy? Spoiler alert: It rarely happens. To paint a picture, I have two pairs of sandals in my closet, and they’re my designated vacation sandals that may be a few too many seasons old. So, when I first slipped on the Hush Puppies Sunshine Slide Sandal, I thought, Now these are too good to be true.
One of the best things about these sandals is that they’re fairly simple in design. Forget the gimmicks and bedazzles because sometimes, less is more. And these puppies look *very* similar to Anine Bing’s slides with less bulkiness, no leather and essentially costs 1/7th of the price.
The Sunshine Sandal comes with simple unlined crossover straps that do not restrict the tops of your feet. They’ve designed the insole with a cushioned memory foam that distributes weight evenly for extra support and comfort, and if the first thing that came to your mind when I said “memory foam” was a mattress or pillow, then you’re on the right track.
Okay, so I think I figured out why these are named the Sunshine Slide Sandal. When I slid them on, all I could think of was Katrina and the Waves “Walking On Sunshine.” Cheesy maybe, but so right. The foam base is like a pillow wrap for your skin. My feet instantly sunk into the squishy soles, and I could tell it’s the type of shoe that’ll mold to my foot over time.
My foot stays a consistent size nine, and I found these to be true-to-size, but for those in-between sizes, I’d suggest going up one.
I am not exaggerating when I tell you that wearing these sandals feels like walking on clouds. From running to the grocery store to vegging out on the deck, these are one of the few sandals where I feel like I could wear them day and night. Most sandals are borderline too flat—and often hard—for my liking, to the point where I can literally feel the pounding of the pavement. Sore sandal feet is a major no-no. With these sandals, though, gone are the aches and pains. Plus, because it has a small platform, you’re lifted a few inches off the ground, so goodbye dirty feet (more on that in a bit).
That brings us to the walking test—the crux of it all. Wearing my slides to a recent event in New York City, I found myself grappling with the decision to wait for an Uber that was 12 minutes away or walk 15 minutes home. Now before any native New Yorkers come at me for having to think this one through, I’d like to note that 1) I am a California girl through-and-through and 2) I sweat very easily, so walking isn’t always appealing. Alas, I chose to get my steps in and put the sandals to the real test.
To my surprise, I didn’t experience the oops-I-just-kicked-my-shoe-off moment, as I do with most backless slides. Honestly, there were one or two times when I thought I was on the brink of a slip, but my bare feet went NYC pavement-free.
Remember when I mentioned the platform? Well, I was shocked when I arrived at my apartment only to think, I don’t have the urge to wash my feet. And let’s face it, there’s nothing worse than collecting the city’s dirty remnants on your soles (especially when it gets warmer). Thanks to the inch elevation, I was soaring high above it all. I’d even wear them in the subway. (GASP!)
For someone who isn’t a fan of feet in general, it’s almost painful for me to admit it, but I’m obsessed. They’re the slides that made me think, Wait, my feet look cute. I love wearing them with either my oversized straight jeans with a small crop top on the weekends or a monochromatic two-piece set. While I wouldn’t couple them with a fancier dress, I’d absolutely throw them on with a breezy and casual linen dress or skirt.
What I appreciate most of all is the reasonable price. The coolest summer slides for $50? I’ll take two pairs, please and thank you.
Basically, if you’re anything like me, your wallet and your toes can breathe a sigh of relief this summer.
