Boots are one of my favorite fashion pieces to buy every fall and winter. They’re functional, cute and make me feel instantly stylish no matter what I’m wearing—mini skirts, jeans, you name it. As soon as I saw Everlane drop The Outlaw Boots (was $298, now $89) in a sand-colored soft suede fabric with Western-inspired details, I knew it was this season’s answer to the cowboy core craze that rocked last summer, so I just had to have it. A few months ago, I was rocking my cowboy boots like my life depended on it, pairing them with baggy jorts and sundresses, but as the temperatures continue to drop, I tend to gravitate towards shorter boots that I can tuck under my straight-leg jeans or wide-leg trousers. Having worn my fair share of knee-high boots, Chelsea boots, rainboots, ankle boots and the like, it was time I tested the stylish Outlaw Boots for myself to see how the suede stunners held up against my day-to-day activities in London. After one month of wear-testing, here are my honest thoughts.

My Review of Everlane’s Outlaw Boots

How I Tested Everlane’s Outlaw Boots

For the past month, I’ve slipped on The Outlaw Boots whenever the moment called—i.e., when they looked good with my outfit and when there was zero chance of rainfall in the forecast. For an in-depth review, I knew I had to get my steps in, which meant that I took them for a spin around the city for sightseeing moments, on the Tube, to dinner and more. Each time, I’ve worn them for multiple hours at a time and with various outfits, including long pants, jeans, shorts and skirts.

How Do Everlane’s Outlaw Boots Fit?

While I’ve never tried Everlane’s shoe collection, I ordered my usual size 9 with the idea that it’d either fit perfectly or slightly roomy—in which case, I would be able to wear thicker socks for extra warmth. The suede shoe slid on with ease and turned out to be a touch big, but nothing that made my heel slip up while walking or left me with the need to size down. The leather sole is smooth and slick, which did cause my feet to slide as I walked, but only when I wore my thin ankle socks. I’ve actually started wearing my Pilates socks with the boots, and the grippy bottoms have been such a game changer for preventing any movement while walking. I also like that The Outlaw Boots have such a wide shaft circumference (measuring 12.5 inches), which really leans into the whole western vibe and is especially ideal for anyone that has wide ankles or shins.

Are the Everlane Outlaw Boots Comfortable?

Honestly, I didn’t find these to be super comfortable straight out of the box. Like a true cowboy boot, these have a hard sole and tapered, pointed toe that limit the breathing room your feet get in the toe box. The first time I wore them, I instantly knew there would be a break-in period. Mind you, I was wearing thin socks, but I felt the soreness and the irritation begin on the tops of my toes and back of my heels. Would a thicker sock with extra cushion have helped? Perhaps, but luckily, once that initial wear was complete, I haven’t had a problem with comfort. In fact, I just wore the boots to a dinner in South Kensington the other day and didn’t think about my feet once, besides the occasional, “These boots make my outfit looks so cute.”

As someone who adores a bit of a heel, I find the 2.75-inch heel beyond walkable, especially thanks to the sturdy block heel. They don’t leave the arches of my feet aching or the balls of my feet sore the next day like many high-heeled boots do, and that’s definitely due to the modest height. I’m also a sucker for a boots and pant combo in the colder months, so I’ve had a lot of fun taking advantage of the shorter, 6-inch shaft height. (The only times when this didn’t work was with my straight-leg jeans, as the silhouette tapered too much to fit over the wide boot.)

The Bottom Line: Are Everlane’s Suede Outlaw Boots Worth It?

What I Like

  • western-inspired details
  • chic suede fabric
  • short shaft height fits under most pants and block heel is easy to walk in

What I Don't Like

  • some break-in period
  • suede fabric is delicate and can’t be exposed to rain

Everlane

If you’re looking to upgrade your boot collection or simply want to splurge on a stylish shoe that will instantly elevate your outfit, look no further than The Outlaw Boots from Everlane. While they don’t boast an impressive traction outsole, offer tons of room at the toes or feel like a cloud of comfort, they are a great swap for anyone who loves the look of cowboy boots.

With western details like pull-on tabs, pointed toes and premium sourced LWG-certified leather and suede finishes, it’s really hard to look at these pretty picks without noticing what a work of art they are. They normally retail for $298 on the brand’s site, but they’re currently on sale for $89, which easily makes them a steal in my book. Oh, and did I mention that they’re available in a brown and black leather finish, too?
