Meet the Expert

Claire Asher is a the fashion product director at Boohoo, a fashion website known for affordable, trendy styles spanning the categories of clothing, shoes and accessories.

How I Chose the Best Black Tie Wedding Guest Dresses

I first tapped fashion pro Asher for her expert advice as far as which types of styles one should look for when shopping for a black tie dress code. Her advice pretty much boils down to something that's classy, comfortable and, preferably, floor-length—though as you'll soon see, there is a little wiggle room. (You can read some more of her suggestions at the bottom of this article.) I then asked fellow PureWow editors to share the dresses they've worn over and over to these types of events in the past, and used their recommendations to whittle down this list. Finally, I looked into best sellers at some of my (and PureWow readers') favorite retailers to select highly rated numbers that are likely to stay in style—and good shape—for many wedding seasons to come.

Editors' Pick

1. BHLDN Leila A-Line Gown

What I Like

  • flutter sleeves
  • empire waist

What I Don't Like

  • neckline may be too deep for some tastes

Anthropologie

PureWow Senior Commerce Editor Stephanie Maida swears by this flutter-sleeve silhouette and stunning satin material for black tie soirées. "I own a nearly identical gown that's come in handy whenever I want to look fancy and feel confident," she says. The deep V-neckline of this pick is met with a pleated empire-waist seam that adds texture and volume, while the slim-fit bodice flows beautifully into a subtle A-line flare. As one of its many 5-star reviewers raves, "The quality was great. It was comfortable, flowy, soft and fun to wear. I was surprised by how much structure it offered, knowing that [it] was such a light fabric."

2. Eliza J Embellished Dress

What I Like

  • high-low hem
  • waist embellishment

What I Don't Like

  • only available in navy

Eliza J

Chiffon is a go-to fabric for weddings in all seasons because of its elegant look and lightweight feel, so whether you're layering in the winter or attempting to stay cool in the summer, this beauty is a great pick. I personally love the surplice neckline and A-line silhouette of the skirt, which is made all the more unique with a high-low hem. But, of course, it's that blingy embellishment at the waist that seals the deal—and takes this number from party-ready to extra-fancy.

3. Norma Kamali Diana Gown

What I Like

  • full body ruching
  • built-in bodysuit for shaping and support

What I Don't Like

  • material is a little thick

Norma Kamali

Equal parts sexy and sophisticated, this one-shoulder dress has been a popular pick among PureWow readers and editors for a few years now. The material is hailed as being durable and easy to wear, while the all-over ruching is surprisingly flattering on all body shapes. The body-contouring shape, built-in bodysuit and thicker material will keep you feeling snatched and supported throughout the night, so you can saunter from the dinner table to the dance floor with ease.

4. The Somerset Maxi Dress Halter Edition

What I Like

  • halter-style
  • fun pattern
  • has pockets

What I Don't Like

  • elastic can dig in

Anthropologie

Anthropologie's popular Somerset dress has been upgraded to a formal-yet-comfortable halter-neck maxi, featuring the same smocked waist, tiered skirt and, yes, even pockets, we've come to know and love from the style. This version is available in two standout motifs, though I'd go with this metallic-accented abstract print to better fit a black tie dress code. It's easy to slip on, and if you're looking for a more modest neckline, this is the dress for you.

10. Bardot Jamila Corset Dress

What I Like

Bardot

I've been loving the evolution of the corset-style dresses à la Bridgerton. This elegant satin option with a fold-over top is a fun take on the trend, and despite it being shorter than your typical black tie number, the beautifully draped pleats and romantic tulip hem make it feel formal enough for an upscale celebration.

11. Alfred Sung One-Shoulder Satin Gown

Alfred Sung

Drapes and folds add show-stopping shape and volume, which can be especially helpful if you're lacking in curves of your own. This one-shoulder dress combines a fitted bodice with a draped high-low skirt that creates a lovely hourglass silhouette, and shows a hint of leg to boot.

What I Like

  • mermaid fit

Lulus

You can’t go wrong with a form-hugging mermaid dress for a black tie affair—by its very nature, it cuts an elegant figure. This one from Lulus boasts a stretchy fabric for the most flattering (and comfortable) fit, as well as a scoop back and adjustable straps. Just keep in mind that the brand suggests sizing up if you have a fuller bust.

13. Abercrombie & Fitch Organza Tiered Mini Dress

What I Like

  • fun tiered design
  • multiple color options

What I Don't Like

  • can be short on taller gals

Abercrombie & Fitch

While short dresses are not ideal for black tie affairs, if you must wear a mini, this one is a great choice. The tiers of the light organza fabric makes it both flirty and fun. The flouncy style would look just about perfect with a pair of gold pumps and some beautiful jewels, too. Although it's on the shorter side, it comes in both petite and tall sizes for the most appropriate fit.

Best Cowl-Neck Black Tie Dress

14. Shona Joy La Lune Cowl Maxi Dress

What I Like

  • cowl neckline

What I Don't Like

  • not much chest support

Shona Joy

The goddess-like drape of this cowl-neck slip dress will most likely never go out of style. Between the fabric's lustrous sheen, unique diagonal seam and delicate tie belt, this not-so-basic frock will have you looking totally ethereal in a crowd.

Best Open Back Dress

15. Solace London X Revolve Petch Maxi Dress

What I Like

  • one-shoulder design
  • open back

What I Don't Like

  • not much chest support

Solace

The diagonal neckline of this crepe maxi contrasts beautifully with the open back, and it has a high slit to show off your legs. To keep eyes drawn up to your shoulders, a bold pair of earrings would be the perfect finishing touch. There may not be much chest support (and the open back doesn't allow for traditional undergarments), but if you grab a sticky bra or nipple covers, you'll be all set.

Best Black Tie Tulle Dress

16. J.Crew Tulle Gown

What I Like

  • tulle overlay
  • extended sizing

What I Don't Like

  • very thin straps

J.Crew

Carrie Bradshaw meets Black Swan in this ballerina-esque tulle maxi you're so gonna want to twirl in. The full-and-flouncy skirt has a tiered design for more volume, while the fitted bodice and deep neckline show off your figure. The straps are adjustable, but quite thin, so full-busted ladies may want to add some tape for additional support.

What I Like

  • side cut-outs
  • open back

What I Don't Like

Best Strapless Black Tie Dress

18. Abercrombie & Fitch Strapless Emerson Dress

What I Like

  • tube dress
  • comfortable silhouette

What I Don't Like

  • not much stretch

Abercrombie & Fitch

Strapless gowns can be tricky, especially if you've got a fuller chest. But this floor-length frock offers a surprising amount of support courtesy of its fitted, ruched bust and zip-back closure. Shoppers do indeed confirm that it stays up and looks flattering thanks to its slim fit through the hem.

What I Don't Like

  • dry-clean only

Abercrombie & Fitch

Not a fan of dresses? No problem. This pleated, wide-pant option is a stylish, sophisticated alternative that still feels feminine and formal. A deep V-plunge on the front and the back gives it a flirty feel, and you'll have four hues to choose from (besides white, of course).

Best LBD

20. Show Me Your Mumu Jasmine Halter Mini Dress

What I Like

  • halter neckline
  • shift silhouette

What I Don't Like

  • runs slightly large

Show Me Your Mumu

Haven’t you heard? Tradition is out the window, because wearing black to a wedding is totally allowed (unless the bride specifically asks you not to). This mini satin LBD has cross-neck design for an elevated, elegant impression. Again, mini dresses aren't common at black tie weddings, but if the dress code is a tad more lax, you can dress this look up with jewelry, heels and perhaps a cashmere wrap.

Best Ruffled Black Tie Dress

21. Lulus In Love Forever Maxi Dress

What I Like

  • ruffled hem
  • open back

What I Don't Like

  • neckline is low for large chests

Lulus

I will definitely be wearing this dress for more than just weddings. The wrap style and ruffled hems add just the right amount of dressy pizzazz without feeling too over-the-top—and just wait 'til. you see the crisscross, lace-up back (swoon!). Some reviewers note that if you have a larger bust, you may want to opt for a dress with a smidge more coverage, but I can see this flowy number working on all sorts of shapes and sizes.

Best High-Slit Black Tie Dress

22. Katie May So Juicy Gown

What I Like

  • cowl neck and back
  • ruched skirt
  • some stretch

What I Don't Like

  • thin material

Katie May

To soften the look, a high-slit gown is best paired with feminine details, such as the draped accenting on this beauty. The cowl neckline and low, cowl back give it a sense of Grecian flair, while the form-skimming fabric should supply enough stretch for a comfortable, unrestrictive fit.

Best Floral Black Tie Dress

23. Lulus Love And Beyond Floral Maxi Dress

What I Like

  • floral print
  • flowy skirt

What I Don't Like

  • some reviewers mention it's too tight in the chest

Lulus

Believe it or not, you can wear floral prints to black tie weddings, so long as you're mindful of the design. Here, the textured, monochrome embellishments over the sheer pink chiffon appears tasteful and elegant, as does the halter-style neck.

Best Black Tie Silk Dress

24. Reformation Anaiis Silk Dress

What I Like

  • silk charmeuse fabric
  • hemming is free

What I Don't Like

  • dry-clean only

Reformation

Nothing feels quite as elegant—or as formal—as a silk gown. Coming in a variety of floral and solid prints, this high-neck, low-back number will turn heads in whichever hue you choose. The style is meant to graze the floor, so you may need some hemming to achieve the ideal length. Luckily, Reformation will cover it.

Best Ruched Black Tie Dress

25. J.Crew Embellished Ruched Dress

What I Like

  • flattering ruching
  • crystal embellishing

What I Don't Like

  • only in black

J.Crew

Ruching can serve to hide any lumps and bumps you hope to camouflage, especially when placed right. Running vertically down the waist, the ruching on this black frock accentuates the waist while the deep V-neck helps to elongate your figure. The best part, though, might be the crystal detailing along the neckline that's basically like built-in jewelry. Get ready to reel in the compliments.

What to Wear to a Black Tie Wedding

Opt for a formal look that's in line with the theme of the event. "Guests to a black tie wedding should always opt for floor-length gowns, and if that's not your style, you can go for a slightly shorter midi-length dress or even a classy suit," says Asher. Don't feel beholden to just a few styles, as there are a lot of options out there, whether you prefer to dress up a simple gown with jewelry and extravagant heels, or you want to go with a fun pick with fewer accessories. "Experiment with [a few different silhouettes] to see which [ones work for] your body type and which ones you find the most comfortable and can [move] in," says Asher.

If you need some help narrowing down your options, many retailers have a formal dress section, or even a black tie specific section to browse.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Counts as a Black Tie Wedding?

A black tie wedding is going to be more upscale (read: very fancy) compared to most other themes. This means following in the footsteps of the bride and groom's attire of formal wear (usually tuxedos and gowns). TL;DR: This is not the time to underdress.

Is It Appropriate to Wear Black to a Black Tie Wedding?

In short, yes. Back in the day, it was considered a faux pas to wear black to weddings in general, as the color evoked a somber vibe. However, the rules have since evolved. "Black dresses are classy and look good on everyone, which is why those who attend black tie events probably have a few gorgeous black gowns on rotation, which are the perfect go-to," mentions Asher.

Are Any Colors Off-Limits to Wear as a Guest at a Black-Tie Wedding?

Obviously, you don't want to outshine the bride on her wedding day, but aside from white and shades of white (think: ivory, cream, or light, light pink) most colors should be good to go for a black-tie wedding. However, the couple may request a color theme, so stick to those shades if applicable, or a hue that fits the season.
