Only in the past five or so years have I found my two passions, fashion and outdoor adventuring, finally experiencing some overlap. As a kid (and a tall one at that) I all too often found it impossible to consider looking cute or stylish while hiking, backpacking or generally enjoying outdoor activities. Everything was either pink or had a weirdly cinched waist and cropped fit, leading me to shop the men’s section, which also did not fit what I wanted. But the winds they are a changing, and there are now so many more options that combine fashion with function, and not just for sizes small through large. And one of the best possible places to begin your hunt for chic outdoor clothing is REI.

The outdoor gear hotspot carries tons of incredible brands—like The North Face, Arc’Teryx, Vuori and Cotopaxi—in addition it its own in-house line of size-inclusive pieces that are often very affordable too. It’s become my number one go-to when I want something that I know will stand up to the elements, be it gusts of 20 mph winds on top of a mountain, chilly mornings at my campsite or a surprise downpour on my commute home from the office. So without further ado, I present to you the ten best jackets at REI to add to your wardrobe ASAP to keep you looking fabulous and feeling prepared for any kind of weather.

Is This Gorpcore Accessory the Hottest Spring NYC Men’s Fashion Trend?

This hip-skimming rain jacket is a bestseller for the brand for so many reasons. The fit is both flattering and comfortable, and the fabric is entirely waterproof (and windproof), but also lightweight, so you won’t feel totally bogged down in even the heaviest of rainstorms. The material is also incredibly durable, meaning it can stand up to city commutes and backcountry exploration. As of publish it comes in four chic colors that are easy to mix and match with just about any wardrobe. Oh, and there’s also an internal drawcord at the waist if you prefer a more cinched look.

I have an older version of this extremely cool jacket and let me tell you, it earns me compliments every single time I wear it. Designed for hiking, it has a waterproof finish and lots of adjustable features to ensure an ideal fit both while you’re moving and while hanging out at the campsite. It handles super well in both wind and rain, and looks supremely cool all the while. P.S. For sizing you may want to consider going up one from your usual for more room to layer underneath in colder weather.

  • Size Range: XS to XXL
  • Materials: 100 percent recycled polyester with non-PFC durable water repellent (DWR) finish
  • Waterproof: yes

This classic Patagonia zip-up is made of a super-cozy fleece that feels incredibly soft and reminds me of my favorite sweaters while out on the trail. But it does more than just look good—it also has plenty of practical features, like a zippered pocket on the shoulder for small essentials, a lined stand collar to protect your neck and chin from wind and two interior zipped pockets. And while it may not have water resistance, it is great at keeping me warm on windy days. FYI, this style definitely runs small, so I highly advise going up one from your usual size for a more comfortable fit, or even two sizes up if you hope to layer thicker pieces underneath.

  • Size Range: XXS to XXL
  • Materials: 100 percent recycled polyester fleece
  • Waterproof: no

I scored this beauty on sale at the end of last winter in a glorious Bottega Green color and it’s been a go-to in my regular rotation ever since. Designed as a tried-and-true rain jacket that will keep you dry on even the wettest hikes, this jacket has armpit vents for better breathability and an adjustable hood that won’t limit your peripheral vision. Plus, the GORE-TEX material is built to last and is also PFC free. Because the material doesn’t have very much stretch, I recommend double checking the size chart before you add to your shopping cart, and if you’re between two sizes you may ultimately feel more comfortable in the larger of the two.

  • Waterproof: yes

Ask any of my family members what my most beloved travel item is and they will reply without hesitation, “her Patagonia Nano Puff.” I own both the version pictured here and the hooded version ($289), and rarely ever travel without them, regardless of where I’m going. The Nano Puff is lightweight, cozy and packs down into its own pocket for compact portability. It’s a fabulous layer for chilly planes and can double as a pillow when needed. Plus, the design strikes that ideal balance between looking sleek while also providing ample roomy for layering and movement. And while the outer shell is windproof, it’s not fully waterproof, so best to layer under a true rain jacket during spring storms.

  • Size Range: XXS to XXL
  • Materials: 100 percent recycled polyester
  • Waterproof: water repellant

Vuori is about so much more than perfect travel joggers and super-soft leggings, and this jacket is proof. The Canyon jacket is lightweight but cozy, ideal for spring and fall days when the temperature can change on a dime. And the roomy fit is incredibly comfortable, though some reviewers suggest sizing down for a more fitted silhouette. This style also has the added benefit of being technical enough to serve you well out on the trails, but chic enough to wear out to dinner with friends for a post-hike treat. Now all that’s left do it is choose from the three gorgeous color options, black, white or Robin’s egg blue.

  • Size Range: XXS to XXL
  • Materials: 85 percent recycled nylon, 15 percent spandex
  • Waterproof: water repellant

I owned one of these fleece jackets in middle/high school and it’s been one of my biggest regrets that I didn’t hold onto it into adulthood. But now I have a brand-new version and it’s every bit as wonderful as I remember. The look is oh-so classic, with just enough ‘90s nostalgia to seem retro without feeling dated. But it doesn’t just look good, it is also thoughtfully designed to perform incredibly well out in the wilderness. The fleece and nylon materials are incredibly durable and have some water repellency to keep you dry in light drizzles. There is an adjustable drawcord at the waist to protect from wind gusts and the stand collar is lined to keep your chin happy and your neck warm. Seriously, this is one piece that will serve you well for not just years to come, but decades.

  • Size Range: XS to 3X

  • Waterproof: water repellant

I love Cotopaxi’s cheery colorblocked pieces, and this classic rain jacket is no exception. It’s lightweight and easy to pack, and the vibrant color options make it fun for both camping and city life. The cuffs have hook-and-loop patches to easily be cinched or loosened on the go, and the hood can actually be adjusted with just one hand to make things even easier. There is some discrepancy in the reviews as the weather or not this jacket fits true to size, but generally it seems to be a safe bet to go up one size if you have a larger chest or wider hips.

  • Size Range: XS to 3X

This insulated hoodie was designed for hiking and outdoor exploration, but is 100 percent cute enough to wear around town too. Despite the silhouette being rather slim, it still offers plenty of warmth, even in wild winds. Reviewers say it fits true to size and is particularly great for spring and fall weather. “This is the jacket I've been looking for,” raves one 5-star reviewer, “a mid-weight lightweight packable jacket for 30 to 50-degree days, that’s not bulky or stuffy when I go indoors. I am in ABSOLUTE LOVE. It’s great for layering under my other jacket for really cold days or wet days, too.”

FAST FACTS

  • Size Range: XS to 3X
  • Materials: recycled polyester taffeta
  • Waterproof: water repellant

This is one of the other jackets I’ve found that can rival my love for the Patagonia Nano Puff. This Halfdays zip-up also packs neatly into its own back pocket for easy portability or to use as a small travel pillow, and I adore the drawcord waist to create the illusion of a cropped silhouette. The fabric is both incredibly soft and wonderfully light, but don’t let that make you think it can’t stand up to chilly weather, it absolutely can. It’s also wind resistant for added protection from the elements. I will say, I find this style runs big—I typically wear a size large, but own a medium in the Bessie—so you’ll likely want to go down one from your usual size when ordering.

  • Size Range: XS to XL
  • Materials: 100 percent recycled nylon
  • Waterproof: water repellant
