No one likes being cold. And with winter in full force, you'll need one of the best down jackets to keep you warm during school drop-offs, on the ski slopes and everywhere in between. But I’m not talking about the overly puffy downs that make you look like a giant marshmallow while you trudge through the snow—though I do love me a super puffy coat. There are plenty of stylish options for everyone that balance functional warmth with fashionable flair. There are even some jackets under $150 that are just as impressive and warm as some of the best coats at Canada Goose, plus plenty of winter coats for short women, too. Whether you’re spending your winters in extreme temperatures and need a supreme Canada Goose parka ($1,675) or just want to look chic by the lodge in the glossy Super Puff jacket from Aritzia (was $275; now $220), there’s a coat out there for you. Here are the 12 best down jackets to keep you bundled up all season long.

How I Chose the Best Down Jackets

Between freelance writer Courtney Campbell and myself, we’ve spent many a winter trudging through the icy streets of Boston, New England, New Jersey, New York and London, so we’ve had our fair share of experience searching for the perfect down jacket. Plus, in addition to asking my stylish and savvy colleagues about their favorite down jackets, I scrolled through trending options that reviewers on social media have confirmed can keep things cozy while withstanding frigid weather, like the TikTok-famous Aritzia Super Puff jacket ($280) and the viral Orolay parka (was $150; now $126) from Amazon, both which come highly recommended by PureWow editors. From there, I curated a list of the top-rated picks at various price points and lengths to suit a variety of needs and weather conditions. To ensure you find the warmest option, I looked for jackets with at least 600-fill-power down, although you'll also find some synthetic down alternatives on this list.

Best Down Jacket Overall

1. Triple F.A.T. Goose Valenti Winter Coat

What I Like

  • flattering A-line fit
  • inclusive size range
  • functional design offers customizable warmth

What I Don't Like

  • high price point

Triple F.A.T. Goose

“This coat is my winter workhorse,” says Jillian Quint, editor-in-chief at PureWow. “It’s outrageously warm and so long I don't have to worry if I'm wearing thin pants.” Super warm (check), water-resistant (check), wind-resistant (check). What’s not to love when it checks off so many boxes? Plus, it offers plenty of ways to customize the warmth according to your preferences, thanks to the insulated detachable hood, two-way front zipper and adjustable straps, so you never have to break a sweat or freeze. “It's also remarkably sleek. No Michelin Man here,” adds Quint.

Fast Facts

  • Size Range: XS to 3XL
  • Outer Material: recycled laminate, recycled nylon
  • Fill: 750 fill-power recycled down, feathers

Best Cropped Down Jacket

2. Canada Goose Garnet Cropped Puffer

What I Like

  • high storm collar design keeps wind out
  • fleece-lined pockets, as well as hidden internal pockets
  • drawstring waistband is great for keeping wind out or making the coat fit more cropped

What I Don't Like

  • cropped fit may feel too short on taller torsos

Canada Goose

As a frugal shopper, I was a bit apprehensive to try this cropped Canada Goose puffer jacket, so you can imagine how surprised I was with how quickly it became one of my most worn winter coats. Both stylish and warm as can be, it’s equipped with a thoughful and functional design that includes a down-filled storm guard, rib cuffs, interior drawcord at the hem, pockets and more. For a jacket that’s cropped, the insulation is rather impressive and does a fantastic job at keeping even the harshest of the London wind out.

Fast Facts

  • Size Range: XXS to XXL
  • Outer Material: pima cotton
  • Fill: 750 fill power responsibly sourced down, feathers

Best Budget Down Jacket

3. Uniqlo Ultra-Light Down Jacket

What I Like

  • water-repellent finish and anti-static lining
  • comes with a storage pouch for traveling
  • affordable

What I Don't Like

  • won’t hold up in freezing temperatures

Uniqlo

Compact and affordable, this lightweight jacket from Uniqlo has been a staple in the closet of PureWow’s SEO Editor Marissa Wu, standing the test of time and holding up against the elements. “I’ve had this down jacket since 2017 and it only started seriously leaking feathers a year or so ago,” she tells me. “At $70, the longevity is pretty good. While I wouldn't wear it alone in 30 degree weather, because it’s so compact, you can layer it as one of many layers and it’s pretty invisible.” Wear it under a stylish wool coat and you’ll be ready for any weather Mother Nature throws at you.

Fast Facts

  • Size Range: XXS to XXL
  • Outer Material: nylon
  • Fill: 750-fill-power down

Best Waterproof Down Jacket

4. Patagonia Tres 3-in-1 Parka

What I Like

  • long-lasting and durable quality
  • two separate pieces give you three looks in one

What I Don't Like

  • pricey

Patagonia

Although this piece is on the pricier side, it is technically three jackets in one. First, you have your classic down parka layer that can keep you warm with 700-fill-power recycled down. Then you have a waterproof outer shell that will keep you dry in a downpour. Finally, you can combine the two to achieve ultimate warmth and weather resistance. All that, coupled with an adjustable hood and stand-up collar, means it should keep you dry in any weather. “I've had the Patagonia Tres 3-in-1 parka for at least four or five years, and it's held up so well through multiple NYC winters and some cold destination travel (like Aspen and Santa Fe),” says PureWow’s Executive Managing Editor, Catrina Yohay. “It keeps your core so blissfully warm you don't even register that the real-feel temp is below 12 degrees." But I mostly love that you're getting the insulation of a down jacket with the durability of a waterproof outer shell—I've lost many a down puffer to irreparable rips, thanks to my dog and his sharp puppy teeth. I also just love the look of it: sleek and simple with a slightly cinched waist. Yes, it's pricey, but as the name suggests it's basically three coats in one (so can be worn during multiple seasons) and will last you for years to come.”

Fast Facts

  • Size Range: XS to XXL
  • Outer Material: 100 percent recycled polyester
  • Fill: 700-fill-power reclaimed duck and goose down

Best Stylish Down Jacket

5. Orolay Thickened Down Jacket

What I Like

  • plenty of pockets for secure storage
  • fleece-lined hood
  • longer length traps heat in

What I Don't Like

  • some reviewers say it has a narrow silhouette

Orolay

We’ve all heard of the Amazon jacket. It went viral in 2019 and has been a recurring winter staple for "cool girls" ever since. And in case you're wondering, PureWow editors think it’s completely worth it (even if five other people you know own one). Not only does it come with a plethora of pockets to hold everything you could possibly need on your person, it also has a cozy fleece-lined hood and an extra-roomy fit. As PureWow Executive Editor Dara Katz describes it, "[It's] basically a tent dress for subzero weather." All those extra zipper details look fun but are also functional; for example, the hem unzips to expand and ventilate, so you don't overheat. It’s no wonder it’s managed to earn more than 20,000 5-star ratings on Amazon.

  • Size Range: XXS to 5XL
  • Outer Material: 100 percent polyester
  • Fill: duck down

Best TikTok-Favorite Down Jacket

6. Aritzia The Super Puff Shorty Jacket

What I Like

  • removable hood
  • water repellent and windproof material

What I Don't Like

  • fit may vary

Aritzia

Across TikTok, Aritzia's Super Puff is synonymous with incredible warmth and style. This shorty version of the iconic puffer comes highly regarded by Senior Editor Dana Dickey, who can’t sing its praises enough in her review of the Aritzia puffer. She says, “I felt cozy in it thanks to the fluffy filling, the ability to cinch the cold out of the bottom of the jacket by tightening the drawstring and the little extras of coat design that made the coat really warm.” It has 700 fill power that’s made from 100 percent responsibly sourced goose down. The brand claims it can keep you covered in temperatures down to -4 degrees Fahrenheit, especially thanks to the full-coverage hood with adjustable straps.

Fast Facts

  • Size Range: 3XS to XL
  • Outer Material: polyester, elastane, polyurethane, nylon
  • Fill: 700-fill-power goose down

Most Insulated Down Jacket

7. Canada Goose Expedition Parka

What I Like

  • abundance of pockets
  • water-repellent, durable outer
  • adjustable drawstring for a relaxed or cinched fit

What I Don't Like

  • oversize fit may feel too roomy on petite figures

Canada Goose

There’s a reason the Expedition parka is one of the brand’s best-selling jackets. Not only can it withstand extreme climates (I’m talking temperatures of -22 degrees Fahrenheit and below), but it’s also constructed with ample functionality and exceptional oversize fit that’ll afford you plenty of space to layer underneath. I especially love that it features an adjustable hood and chin guard, both of which will keep you bundled up in snowstorms. Plus, the chin guard is lined with a super-soft fabric that won’t irritate your skin. And just wait until you get a load of the pockets. According to PureWow’s former Commerce Editor, Olivia Dubyak, it’s a coat you can often “borrow” from your significant other. She says, “It’s incredibly warm and isn’t super stiff which I like, [and] the hood is really big and comfortable and doesn’t fall when it’s windy. I had a lot of rainy/snowy days where I had to walk a lot in this and it did a great job at keeping me dry.”

Fast Facts

  • Size Range: XS to 3XL
  • Outer Material: polyester, cotton
  • Fill: 625 fill power responsibly sourced down, feathers

Best Lightweight Down Jacket

8. Free People Poppy Packable Puffer Jacket

What I Like

  • two-way zipper is stylish and great for ventilation
  • ultra-lightweight construction
  • stylish design and cute colorways

What I Don't Like

  • down alternative fill won’t keep out gusts of wind

Free People

My mom’s an avid neighborhood walker, so one birthday, my sister surprised her with this packable puffer to keep her warm on days when it was a bit chilly. Little did they both know, I ended up migrating the zip-up to my closet. Hey, can you blame me? Not only is it cute as can be with its puffy and roomy silhouette, but it’s also great at keeping me warm on brisk walks when it’s chilly out. It won’t keep out huge gusts of wind, so don’t expect this to be a solid winter option, though it’s great for layering under other pieces. I especially love the two-way zipper for times when I need a little more ventilation to dry off my sweat.

Fast Facts

  • Size Range: XS to XL
  • Outer Material: nylon, polyester
  • Fill: PrimaLoft ThermoPlume, a vegan-friendly down alternative

Best Packable Down Jacket

9. The North Face ThermoBall Eco Jacket 2.0

What I Like

  • packable design is travel-friendly
  • lightweight and thin fabric is great for layering
  • water-repellent technology

What I Don't Like

  • snug fit and material doesn’t stretch

The North Face

My dad has had the men’s version of this style for many years now, often wearing it under his wool coats in peak winter or on weekends for walks or other leisure activities...that is, if he can find it. Often, I’m sneaking it away for my own use because for a thin little jacket, it is beyond warm. Are you starting to sense a theme here? The best part about this jacket is that it folds into a nice, compact pouch — which means, yes, you can bring another coat for winter vacation (and it doubles as a nice headrest for travel!). It’s water-repellant and a nice midweight that won’t leave you feeling too weighed down or exhausted from trying to pack it. I also love the chic quilted pattern that makes it feel a little upscale, not to mention super warm and comfy, per shoppers.

Fast Facts

  • Size Range: XS to 3XL
  • Outer Material: 100 percent recycled nylon
  • Fill: eco polyester

Most Color Options

10. Aritzia Super Puff Long Coat

What I Like

  • soft, water-resistant and repellent fabric
  • machine washable
  • certified for -40 degree temps

What I Don't Like

  • one buyer mentions it runs slightly big

Aritzia

Another Aritzia down jacket that captured Dickey’s heart? The Super Puff long coat. She says, “[It] is so fashion-forward because of the water-resistant body, and also figure-flattering.” Using innovative fabric from Japan, this coat is engineered to keep you warm in temperatures below 40 degree Fahrenheit, plus it has an elongated silhouette to cover beyond your waist and bum. “Basically, when I wear this coat, I feel like I'm a chic Parisienne—but at a way more affordable price point than Bogner or Canada Goose,” she adds.

Fast Facts

  • Size Range: 3XS to 2XL
  • Outer Material: nylon, polyester, elastane
  • Fill: 700+ fill-power goose down, feathers

Best Quilted Down Jacket

11. Canada Goose Aurora Parka

What I Like

  • contoured quilting gives shape to the coat
  • removable hood offers flexibility
  • interior drawcord at the waist to cinch in fit

What I Don't Like

  • length may not be long enough for extreme climates

Canada Goose

If you’re looking for a quality puffer that’ll last you a lifetime, consider Canada Goose’s Aurora Parka. It’s a super soft option with a minimalist quilted style that’s ideal for every day wear. It’s so good, it can turn even the most skeptical into super fans—but don’t just take my word for it. “I will be totally honest, I always thought that the Canada Goose jackets were over hyped,” admits Mary Rogers, director of audience development at PureWow. “To me it seemed like a jacket that people bought just because of the label, [but] last Christmas I was totally proven wrong. I got the parka for a Christmas gift after my husband and I moved to the mountains in New Hampshire. I regularly walk my dog in negative 10-degree Fahrenheit weather in the winters, and this parka has been the absolute best. I am warm and toasty, and my dog is happy because I'm not rushing his morning strolls to head back into the warm house. [It’s] definitely a big coat, but who doesn't want to be snuggled up in the winter?”

Fast Facts

  • Size Range: 2XS to 2XL
  • Outer Material: recycled nylon
  • Fill: 750 fill power responsibly sourced down, feathers

Best Down Jacket for Mountain and City Life

12. The North Face 1996 Retro Nuptse Down Jacket

What I Like

  • oversize, cropped silhouette with boxy fit
  • retro design and appeal
  • packs into itself with the stowable hood

What I Don't Like

  • arms may be short for taller gals

The North Face

The '90s called and I’m here for it. The North Face brought back its iconic Nuptse jacket and managed to make it even better with a lofty 700-fill-power down insulation that should keep you warm whether you’re a mountaineer or city slicker. You can also make sure cold air stays out with its bungee cinch cord at the hem to pull things tight. My sister owns this boxy, oversize style and always looks like the epitome of street style cool whenever she’s wearing it. While it’s one I have yet to steal and wear myself (shocker, I know) because she wears it any chance she gets whenever the temperature drops below 60 degrees in California, you can bet I’ll keep trying. Fashionistas, this one’s for you.

  • Outer Material: nylon
  • Fill: 700-fill-power goose down

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is Down in a Jacket?

Down in jackets is the warm, heat-trapping fluff sourced from duck or goose feathers which insulates the garment. If a brand responsibly sources its down to avoid animal cruelty, it will display a Responsible Down Standard (RDS) certification. If you’re allergic or want to avoid animal products, there are also some vegan and down-alternative materials you can find in winter jackets.

Is a Down Jacket the Warmest?

Down fill power is essentially a quality ranking of down, so warmth can vary jacket by jacket. The number is a measurement of how "lofty," or fluffy, the down is compared to its weight. The higher the down fill power, the less of it you need to achieve peak insulation, which typically results in a lighter weight jacket. A lower down fill power means that you need more of it to fill a coat; that's why you'll see uber-puffy jackets with lower down fill numbers.

To get the warmest option out there, choose a jacket with 900 fill power, as it will have the highest warmth-to-weight ratio. That means it’s highly compressible (and packable!), lighter and incredibly warm.

Do You Wash a Down Jacket?

For the least amount of fuss, you can get a down jacket dry-cleaned. However, it is possible to launder it at home. You can potentially machine-wash your down jacket (if your washing machine is big enough and you get the OK from the garment tag) by using the gentle cycle with cold water and a down-specific detergent. Skip the spin cycle so the jacket can properly dry. You can also opt to hand wash it by soaking the jacket in a bathtub for up to 60 minutes with a detergent. To rinse it, lightly squeeze out any excess water.

Do You Dry a Down Jacket?

A wet down jacket can be incredibly heavy and will take a while to hang dry, but to keep the shape intact, it's the best option. You should lay it flat to dry on a drying rack rather than on a hanger, and it should be dry within 24 to 48 hours. Be sure to place a towel below it to catch the drippings!
