While millennials are associated with their long-standing love affair with skinny jeans, I, for one, have always favored my flares. Blame it on my adolescent obsession with the ‘60s and ‘70s, or on their resurgence during my formative fashion years in the 2000s. In any case, I’ve always appreciated their retro look and leg-lengthening effect, especially as someone who stands at just 5’1”. And now that flare jeans are officially back in style (again), I’ve wasted no time dusting off my old favorites—and stocking up on some new ones.

Unlike wide-leg pants or those controversial barrel jeans, which can both be tricky for petites, flare silhouettes are pretty universally flattering, and are famous for making short legs look longer—so long as you choose the right pair and know how to style them, that is. If you’re a fellow short gal looking to give flare jeans a whirl this time around, read on for my petite pro tips. You’ll be looking (and feeling) groovy in no time.

Here's How I Pull Off Barrel Jeans as a 5'1" Petite

1. Hike Up That Waistline

Spanx

The number one rule of thumb for petites trying to elongate their legs is to choose bottoms with higher waists. It creates the illusion that your pins start higher up on your body and then go on for days. (See above, if I do say so myself.) To get the full effect, however, you’ll want to tuck in your top or wear a cropped style that shows off your waistline.

2. Go as Long as You Can Get Away With

You don’t want to be tripping over your pants, of course, but when it comes to flares, the longer the length, the better. Visually, the wider hem is more flattering if it hits lower on your leg, again because it creates the illusion of length. A flare that ends at your ankle or higher, on the other hand, is going to cut off your leg prematurely, and make it appear shorter. Even petite-length pieces like these SpanxShape EveryWear flares ($148) may run on the longer side for this reason, which brings me to my next point…

3. Wear with Platforms or Chunky Heels

Quince

Flare jeans were practically designed to go with platform shoes, and as they say, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. The wider hem and lengthier cut of the silhouette is perfectly complemented by taller, chunkier heels (and vice versa), and that’s great news for us petites who need a little extra help in the height department. If you’re afraid of teetering in full-on platforms, though, don’t sweat it—even a sturdy, block-heeled pair of booties can help bring the look together.

4. Opt for Slimmer Flares

Quince

Just as shorties should avoid cropped styles, so too should we steer clear of wider, more dramatic flares. The sweet spot for petites is a pant that’s slim-fitting through the hips and thighs and then starts to gently widen from the knee down (like these stretchy Quince jeans, $50). If the flare shape is too extreme, or starts too high up, you’ll face the same issue of a shorter-looking leg.

5. Play with Proportion

In addition to being more flattering on short gals, slimmer flares also give us an opportunity to play with proportion up top. Totally wide-leg designs are best paired with more form-fitting tops for petites, but since you’re choosing a style that doesn’t widen until the very bottom, you can balance out the look with slightly oversized or billowy tops (think blouson sleeves and babydoll tops)—so long as they can still be tucked in or are short enough to show off the high waist of the pants. These styles can also help you embrace the built-in boho aesthetic that flares tend to bring to an outfit.

6. Create Long Lines with Your Layers

Similarly, since you’re not working against the shape of your pants, you can skip the cropped jacket and elongate your form even further with layers that create long, sleek lines. You don’t want to go too bulky or oversized, but a polished, straight-fit blazer like the one I’m wearing here from Ann Taylor adds extra interest to your outfit while also playing up the length afforded by the bottoms.

7. Show Off a Pointy Toe

No, a platform heel isn’t your only flare-worthy footwear option. Alternatively, you can’t go wrong with a pointed-toe shoe. Whether in boot, pump or slingback form, the shoe shape is one all petites should keep up their sleeve—erm, pantleg—since they can work their leg-stretching magic with practically any sort of bottoms. As for why pointy shoes look particularly good with flares? They serve as a contrast to the wide, bell-shaped hem and punctuate your look by bringing it all back to a sleek, sharp point. The visual effect is that of extra length, and therefore, height.
