How We Chose the Best Bathing Suits for Curvy Women

When searching for the best bathing suits for curvy women, we asked actual curvy women about their favorite brands. We reached out to content creators, fashion experts and PureWow editors to share their top swimwear recommendations that offer full coverage and comfort without sacrificing on style. We also scoured the internet to find popular picks from stores like Target, Amazon and Aerie. And, as a curvy gal myself, I also included a few of my own recommendations that I believe our readers will enjoy wearing.

Most Universal

1. YouSwim Apolmb High Waist Two-Piece

What We Like

  • offers universal sizing
  • inclusive marketing
  • stretchy material

What We Don't Like

  • pricey

YouSwim

This two-piece comes in a universal size that's comfortable and flattering on all body types. You can choose between two fits: stretch one (which covers sizes 2 to 14) and stretch two (which covers sizes 14 to 24). Both aim to compliment wearers with large busts, long torsos and everything in between. The top features a square neckline (but no built-in bust support), while the bottom is high-waisted but adjustable, so you can rock a high or low cut.

As a whole, the set offers medium coverage, is super stretchy and expert-approved. “Their marketing campaign employs models of all sizes and bodies, which is always awesome. At first, YouSwim’s universal sizing made me dubious, and when they arrived they looked so small, but trust me they do stretch to a size 24!," says Ogilvie.

The adjustable straps also let you customize the fit to your body and provide medium coverage so you can show a little booty under the sun. “Skims has amazing size ranges with constant trendy drops. I love that so many of their suits come with cover-ups or accessories that you can wear in the water for more coverage, but it’s also so stylish that it doesn’t even feel like you’re wearing it for modesty, but to complete your whole look,” says Jay.

Aerie

Aerie is known for their bras, but don’t overlook their extensive bikini collection—like this stylish black top that's currently $15 (the most affordable deal on this list, FYI). It’s crafted with recycled nylon and spandex that’s stretchy and soft. Plus, the heart-shaped neckline and adjustable straps offer a comfortable fit that won’t slip and shift when you’re doing laps in the water. "This top lifts my chest without making my boobs look like they're falling out. The balconette style is chic and sexy, too," says Olivia Dubyak, commerce editor at PureWow.

"I'd also like to point out that I'm a midsize girlie with a larger chest and wide hips, so the high-waisted crossover style of the bottoms accentuates my waist and flatters my hips wonderfully. Plus, they're slightly cheeky, which I love on my bum. Aerie is pretty interchangeable with their tops and bottoms, so these go well together."

I've never owned a tankini before, but I appreciate how easy it was to find my size and select the style that I wanted. It was comfortable and accentuated my curves (in a good way!).

The subscription box allows you to pick your own colors, choose the styles you want, while asking for your specific bra size, swimwear shape (bikini or high-waisted) and bottom size for the best fit for you. What to Consider When Buying a Bathing Suit for Curvy Women

When searching for a swimsuit, we asked our panel of experts to share their tips in finding the right one for you.

  • Bust Coverage: You’ll want to find a swimsuit that offers enough support for your boobs, so look for thick, adjustable straps that won’t dig into your shoulders and a scoop or classic bra neckline to secure the girls. “I’m a size 40F, so I’m always looking for support, preferably without underwire,” explains Ogilvie. “If I’m going to be in a swimsuit all day, I don’t want to wrestle with underwire or shapewear. I want to find a swimsuit that can provide the best chest support.”
  • Butt Coverage: As you’re searching for bust coverage, consider your derrière, too. Ask yourself, do you want a high cut, full coverage or little to no material in this area? “High-waist bottoms are definitely the most comfortable, but find what works best for you and your style,” says Koroma. “I have found some great briefs, low-waist string bikinis and swim skirts that all look great on different body types.”
  • Comfort: There are plenty of swimsuits out there, but you've got to find one that you’re comfortable in. Don’t just follow trends because everyone else is wearing them. If you don’t want to rock a bikini at the beach, then don’t. You can check out a stylish one-piece, a high-waisted bottom or a long-sleeve suit.
  • Design: Are you looking for a specific color, print or cut? Try mixing and matching to change things up for the summer. “I want attention on me in my swimwear,” says Jay. “I'm not trying to hide just because I’m plus size, give me all the patterns!”
  • Extended Sizes: Unfortunately, some fashion brands still only go up to an XL. Luckily, brands like Summersalt, Eomenie and Skims are providing more sizes that give all body types the opportunity to rock the coolest swimwear. “Swimwear should be available to empower all bodies and sizes!” adds Richards.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Are the Latest Swimsuit Trends for Curvy Women?

If you’re ready to board the trend train, the experts we interviewed weren’t shy about spilling the swimwear trends that are going to be huge this summer, so look out for:

1. Belly Chains: “I find them so cute and another great way to accessorize your already awesome beach body,” says Ogilivie. “If you are a bigger babe in a bikini, you are already showing off that tummy—so dress her up and give her some jewelry to go along with it! Heads are already going to turn for you, so give them a little extra something to look at.”
2. Modesty Swimwear: Ochoa tells us, “I love the trend of reclaiming more ‘modest styles’ as cool and not lame! It isn’t lame to want more butt coverage and boob support! I love how more brands are releasing fun styles in more modest fits that don’t scream middle schooler or grandma.’”
3. Retro Designs: “I’m loving retro sporty styles and color-blocking,” says Koroma. “It’s such a fun throwback and it [looks] great on everyone.”
4. Swim Dresses: “I love how you can wear them during both day and night. It’s so versatile!” says Richards.
5. Crop Top Swimwear: “It’s very ‘90s supermodel, so it’s nice to see this trend in plus-size swimwear,” says Illena. “Whether it’s a short-sleeve or long-sleeve top, this style looks good on everyone.”

Is it Better to Size Up or Size Down in Swimsuits?

Not all brands (or styles) are the same, so you want to look over their size chart to see what option might work best for you. Also, the reviews section will often give you an indication of whether you need to size up or down for a particular piece. But if you've reached a dead end, consider measuring yourself at home. You'll want to focus on your bust, underbust, hips, torso and waist to get the best measurements for your swimsuit.
