Abercrombie & Fitch Petite Try-On: Collage of Stephanie Maida
Stephanie Maida/Abercrombie & Fitch/Dasha Burobina

Abercrombie & Fitch looks a lot different these days than it did when I, a millennial, would skulk around it in high school, waiting for my friends to finish shopping so I could drag them to the Hot Topic across the mall. And I’m not just talking about the stores themselves (which have apparently gotten a lot cozier and, thankfully, a lot brighter), but mostly the brand’s clothing, which in the past few years has felt more chic and grown-up, not to mention a lot more accommodating to diverse body types. In addition to supplying a fabulous selection of plus-size styles, A&F has also been killing it on the petite fashion front, offering a bunch of styles in short (and even extra-short) lengths that make shopping as a shortie a lot more convenient.

For this reason, A&F has now become one of my absolute favorite retailers as a 5’1” fashionista who’s looking to invest in timeless, quality pieces while still being able to dabble in some trends—some of which may occasionally be out of my comfort zone. So, while I do most of my shopping online, I decided to take a trip to my local Abercrombie & Fitch outpost to try on some fresh, spring-ready pieces IRL ahead of my next wardrobe update.

Although there weren’t a lot of petite sizes available in-store at the Abercrombie location I visited, after circling the women’s section (thrice) and hitting the dressing room (twice), I found plenty of pieces that worked great on my petite frame—including some longer dresses that I was pleasantly surprised to discover didn’t even need to be hemmed. If you’re a fellow petite wondering how A&F’s latest styles would translate to your height, read on for all my top picks—with pics!

I’ve been swooning over the oh-so-easygoing look of these tie-front tops since they started popping up on my feed last year, but I’ll be honest, I wasn’t sure I could pull ‘em off—mostly because I have a larger bust and they seemed like a wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen. But I was pleasantly surprised when I slipped on this knitted vest version. After some slight tightening of the ties, the top showed a lot less skin than I thought it would, and it was effortlessly paired with the nude bra I was wearing underneath, making nip slips a nonissue. I also loved the material, which felt substantial enough to not be see-through but still light enough for warm weather (thank you, cotton blend!). Though the exact contrast-trim colorway I’m wearing here is currently sold out online, the top is available in a solid cream, among other colors.

I’ll be honest, I’m not a fan of shorts. Given my height, they almost always hit at a weird spot on my legs, and I hate the way tighter ones end up bunching up between my legs after taking just a few steps. But this style just might be the one to change my mind. Between the comfortable, high-rise waist and looser fit around the hips and thighs, these “dad shorts” are exactly what I’ve been missing. Despite the fact that they only come in standard lengths, I felt that they hit at the perfect spot on my leg—not too short, not too long. I also liked the soft-yet-sturdy feel of the denim, which is made up mostly of cotton with only 1 percent elastane for stretch. But most of all I adored the slits at each side, which work to subtly elongate the leg while adding visual interest and breathability.

My inner Fran Fine was immediately drawn to the trendy leopard-print design of this denim mini, even though I wasn’t sure how much I’d like the high neckline. As I mentioned, I have a fuller bust, and high-neck styles can make me look (and feel) a little squashed-in. But while the rigid denim style has a mostly slim fit, it ended up being totally fine—I could even button it up to the top without experiencing any gaping (a rare experience for me). The dress has a subtle A-line shape, as well as thoughtfully placed curved seaming that helped to create a flattering silhouette on my body. It was love at first try-on. While the frock does indeed come in a petite length, I actually ended up going home with it in the standard size since it hit just above my knee and could totally be styled as a day-to-night outfit on days when I’m in the office.

These pieces could be purchased and worn separately, but they’re technically designed to be a matching set—and I, for one, loved them together. The full look was giving “chic safari” and the linen and viscose fabric was so light and airy, I could absolutely see myself wearing it under the beating sun without breaking a sweat. A coordinating set is the perfect way to look put-together while putting in the least amount of effort, and the unique, asymmetrical button-up design of this vest just makes the outfit all the more elevated. There’s a tie detail at the back that I couldn’t quite tighten on my own alone in the dressing room, but cinching it a bit gives it an even more flattering hourglass look. As for the shorts? Another hit. Good length, easy-breezy fit and adjustable with a drawstring at the waist. Yep, I could live in these—together or apart.

Abercrombie & Fitch Petite Try-On: Blue Fruit-Printed Romper Shift

How adorable is this little linen-blend shift? Like I was when I started putting it on, you might be surprised to learn that it’s actually a skort-style romper—so you don’t have to be alarmed by that super-mini length (which happens to be great for us petites, even in the standard sizing I’m donning here). In addition to the built-in shorts, I was also not expecting the fit to be as loose and boxy as it was—but was definitely glad for it. Instead of being skin-tight and restricting, this number is perfectly relaxed, and ideal for throwing on when you’re running late to brunch or heading to the beach for the day. The spaghetti straps are adjustable and, yes, this baby even has pockets. Of course, I can’t not mention the playful fruit-stamped pattern that first caught my eye on the rack—very The White Lotus in Sicily vibes—but the skort/romper also comes in multiple other prints and solids, so you can take your pick.

I’ve had my eye on this fit-and-flare frock for a while now, so when I spotted it in-store in this new, picnic-ready checked pattern, I couldn’t resist giving it a whirl. Let’s just say I was not disappointed. The slim-fitting bodice, complete with shape-enhancing darting, worked so well on my figure—I could even ditch my bra and the gals still felt supported. The thick, sturdy fabric boasts just the right amount of stretch to keep me feeling snatched but not suffocated, and, of course, the pockets can’t be beat. I didn’t mind the maxi length that  the standard version gave me here, but I did end up ordering this frock in the petite length online, just to get more of that midi look.

Abercrombie & Fitch’s barrel jeans were the ones to officially sell me on the controversial style, so while I usually wouldn’t gravitate toward this type of slouchy, pull-on pant, I decided to give it a try. I’m so happy I did. They made me feel like Kim Possible in the best way (#TBT), with a loose, sporty fit that didn’t look too extreme despite the barrel shape. The stretchy draw waist sat a little lower on my hips than I’m used to, but was nevertheless comfortable and complementary. And don’t even get me started on the 100 percent cotton twill material that I could tell would be so cooling in warmer weather. These, too, come in a short length, but the standard hem fell to the top of my foot and wouldn’t need to be tailored for my 5’1” height.

I’m a big fan of Abercrombie & Fitch’s formal dresses for petites, and have been eyeing this new style from its latest wedding guest dress collection ever since it dropped. While I wouldn’t wear this exact polka-dot colorway to a wedding given its mostly white hue, it’s ideal for other springtime soirees, from garden parties to baby showers to al fresco rooftop dinners (but the frock also comes in two wedding-appropriate solids, FYI). The retro pattern and silhouette is made a touch more modern thanks to on-trend features like the dipped waist and bubble hem, both of which I found to be fun and flattering. The skirt does have a lot of volume, especially in this standard length, so I would probably opt for this style in the petite size; still, the fitted bodice (which comes complete with some stretchy smocking at the back) served as the perfect contrast—and was supportive enough to go braless.  The high-quality cotton sateen fabric and inclusion of pockets were just the cherries on top.

I couldn't resist slipping on this gorgeous bomber jacket to see how it looked—and let me just say, it was as good as expected. Oversized, but not so much so that I was swimming in it, it had that just-right relaxed fit that made me feel very "cool girl." The soft vegan suede feels just as luxe as it looks, which I was definitely impressed by, and the lining felt smooth and cool against my skin. Of course, it was the little design details—from the collar to the gold-accented chest pockets—that really had me sold, given that they turn the typically sporty bomber silhouette into something much more elevated. And the weight? Exactly what you'd want on a cool spring night.
