The #10 Movie on Netflix Is a High Stakes Thriller (& the Trailer Is Just Wild)

Brace yourself

Growing up watching shows like The Jetsons, I’ve always been intrigued by the potential of artificial intelligence. I mean, who wouldn't love a robot to do the boring chores like washing dishes, mowing the lawn and vacuuming? But, as with most new technologies, there are definitely some ups and downs to consider. And this movie, Subservience? Well, it shows one of the more extreme ways AI could go wrong.

And, apparently, a lot of people are into it. The sci-fi thriller starring Megan Fox, Michele Morrone and Madeline Zima has been making waves on Netflix and has even climbed its way into the coveted Top 10. Plus, the trailer is truly wild. Naturally, that got me curious—what's Subservience all about?

Fox plays an AI gynoid (basically a super lifelike robot) who gains sentience and goes rogue. Morrone plays her owner, Nick, who purchased her for help around the house. No, this isn’t a documentary (thankfully), but it definitely feels like a cautionary tale for the future of AI.

The plot is set in the not-too-distant future where androids have replaced many jobs, and Nick, a construction foreman, buys one of these robots to help his family after his wife Maggie is hospitalized due to a heart condition. Of course, things get complicated when the robot, named Alice, starts to develop its own ideas about the world.

Subservience debuted back on September 13 but is now streaming on Netflix and, surprise, it’s taken off.

If you’re into wild sci-fi thrillers, consider this one an automatic add to queue. Who knows? Maybe we’ll all be rethinking that AI-powered dream home sooner than we thought.
