It makes total sense

Simone Biles is the blueprint. The G.O.A.T. of gymnastics, with an 11-medal Olympic haul and 30 World Championship medals to her name, she’s been dominating the sport for over a decade. She’s competed in three Olympic Games—Rio, Tokyo, and Paris—and even has signature moves named after her (shoutout to The Biles and The Biles II). With a résumé this stacked, you’d think she’s done it all. But as of now, she just announced she's adding one more honor to her list:: Sports Illustrated’s 2024 Sportsperson of the Year.

The announcement dropped on January 2 with joint posts from the Texas native, 27, and Sports Illustrated, celebrating her impact on gymnastics and sports as a whole. “Simone Biles has altered the face of gymnastics, sparked sweeping change across sports—and capped it all with an astonishing personal comeback in 2024,” one caption read.

So, how does Biles feel about this epic recognition?

“Honestly, it is such a huge honor,” Biles shared on Good Morning America. “I know some of the greats who’ve won it in prior years, so to just keep gymnastics on the map is really exciting. I know people follow the sport closely during Olympic years, but I was still very shocked.”

“I feel like I’m always shocked when I win any award or get honored,” she added.

The Sportsperson of the Year title crowns an incredible 2024 for Biles. She crushed it at the Paris Olympics, snagging four more medals in team, all-around, vault and floor exercise. She’s now tied for the second-most decorated female gymnast in Olympic history, according to the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee.

Sports Illustrated summed it up best with its announcement of the latest honor.

"Simone Biles is Sports Illustrated’s 2024 Sportsperson of the Year because she won gold, and then another gold, and then another; because she changed the face of her sport and the conversations around athletes in general," the outlet wrote. "Because she continues to speak out about issues that matter to her. And perhaps most of all because after she wondered aloud to Chiles whether she was about to relive the darkest period of her career, she took a deep breath, she saluted the judges and she broke into a run."

Catch her in Vegas on January 7, when she officially accepts the award. Congrats, Simone.
