It’s been about eight months since Prince William first debuted his beard and, let’s just say, royal watchers have not been shy about their opinions (spoiler alert: they love it). Now, Kate Middleton is finally sharing her thoughts on his scruffy new look.

Wasn't expecting that answer

On Monday, the Princess of Wales made her return to the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade at Wellington Barracks, where she visited the Irish Guards—a tradition she had to skip last year due to health reasons. Dressed in a stunning bottle-green Alexander McQueen coat, a matching hat and a gold shamrock Cartier brooch, Kate took time to chat with section commanders, and naturally, the topic of William’s beard came up.
“These trends come and go,” she said, according to Hello!. “I was saying to my husband, I’m not sure how long he’s going to keep his for.”
While Kate kept her opinion neutral, former royal aide Jason Knauf once hinted at her true feelings. In an interview with People, he remarked, “If she didn’t like it, it wouldn’t be there. I can tell you that.”
Meanwhile, their 9-year-old daughter, Princess Charlotte, had a very intense reaction to the facial hair. According to William, she wasn’t a fan when he first grew it out.
“Well, Charlotte didn’t like it the first time,” he admitted back in November, per Hello!. “I got floods of tears the first time I grew a beard, so I had to shave it off. And then I grew it back.”
William first shocked the internet when he appeared with his new facial hair in early August, starring alongside Kate in a video congratulating Team Great Britain on their Olympic success. It was the first time in eight years that he’d rocked a beard and fans were here for it.But the scruff didn’t last long. By the end of the month, William was back to his clean-shaven look while attending church near Balmoral Castle—leading many to speculate that the beard was just a short-lived summer experiment. However, the beard later made its triumphant return and at least for now, it looks like the beard is here to stay.
