Kate Middleton Just Tried ‘Bag Layering’ with Her Latest Wimbledon Look

New style term to add to your repertoire (and it seems Kate Middleton is way ahead of us on this one): "bag layering." You know, when you pack an oversized tote with all the essentials, plus a smaller pouch or bag inside. The inner purse can be used for organization purposes, to hold the important stuff like a phone or to whip out at a moment's notice for happy hour drinks. Work, daycare, school, social life: We schleppers are all too familiar with business (utilitarian tote) on the outside, party (fun/funky/ladylike pouch or handbag) on the inside.

As NYC-based fashion editor, stylist and former WSJ deputy fashion director Becky Malinsky writes on her substack, 5 Things You Should Buy, "The vessel for your phone / wallet / keys should be equal parts 'spark joy' and 'hardest working accessory.'"

The Princess of Wales obviously got the fashion girl memo, and tried out the bag layering trend this weekend at Wimbledon. Wearing a green Roland Mouret dress for the mens singles finals that saw Carlos Alcaraz topple Novak Djokovic in an intense five-set match, Middleton entered the All England Club carrying a structured leather tote (seen in this Instagram post), identified as the now-retired 'Quincy' style by Victoria Beckham that she's brought to Wimbledon at least three times previously.

Here's the Princess of Wales carrying the style at Wimbledon in both 2016 and 2017.

Later, while in the Royal Box stands, she could be seen holding a small clutch that had clearly been layered inside the larger tote bag when she entered (and probably containing her phone and lipstick already for easy accessory switching). The clutch is the 'Natasha' clutch by Emmy London (shoutout to Instagram account @royalfashionpolice for their nonstop fashion ID'ing).

As for Middleton's larger tote, while you can often find the Victoria Beckham 'Quincy' style tote bag on resale sites, it is a retired style. Here are some similar bags to shop below, plus more K.Middy-approved styles.

Leave it to the princess to inspire our layered bag lady tendencies.
