Hoda Kotb Breaks Down on ‘Today’ Show While Interviewing Drew Brees About $5 Million Donation to Coronavirus Relief

Hoda Kotb had a very human moment on the Today show this morning.

The 55-year-old celebrated anchor got emotional while interviewing New Orleans Saints quarterback, Drew Brees, who pledged $5 million to coronavirus relief in New Orleans.

Kotb, who has deep ties to the Crescent City, began to tear up as she discussed the toll the pandemic has taken on Louisiana. Thankfully, Brees has stepped in to help feed residents in need during this trying time. Kotb expressed her hope that generosity like Brees’s proves to also be contagious and, as they swapped “love ya’s” and signed off, Kotb began to cry (while maintaining that beautiful smile and a strong sense of professionalism).

The anchor looked at the camera and apologized for her emotional response, saying, “I’m sorry,” and taking a moment to gather herself and her papers.

Her co-host, Savannah Gutherie, chimed in on a spilt screen (the Today show is appropriately practicing social distancing) and consoled her colleague from afar.

“Hoda, I know it’s a lot,” Gutherie said. “Hoda, I’m sorry, hon. Take a moment. It’s a lot. I know where your heart is, my dear, I do…Deep breath.”

Kotb continued to be choked up, so Gutherie jumped in and kept things going so her friend and co-worker could collect herself.

Fans were quick to show support for Kotb, who many said showed the overwhelming sense of empathy and uncertainty that many Americans are feeling.

Although Kotb has yet to make a statement, we can definitely say it’s refreshing to see some real compassion in these unique times.

We love you, Hoda!
