Henry Winkler’s 2023 trip across the pond turned into a royally memorable experience, and it’s all thanks to Queen Camilla.

During an interview with People on August 12, the 78-year-old actor recalled, “We were invited to Ascot, the royal races. You know, the one you hear about in My Fair Lady and all throughout history. And we got invited!”

Winkler and his wife, Stacey Weitzman, were making their rounds in the U.K. at the time—Ireland and Scotland included—while promoting his memoir, Being Henry.

He couldn’t help but gush about the royal experience including the grand horse-drawn carriage entrance that King Charles III, 75, and Queen Camilla, 77, made. But the real kicker? A three-course lunch where Winkler got the surprise of a lifetime.

“Suddenly, there’s this buzz in the room: ‘The Queen wants to meet Henry.’ So, we stroll down to the paddock, and next thing you know, twelve men in forest green uniforms march out. Then, right in the middle of them, there she is. She’s dressed in white, and she comes right up to me. I tip my hat and chat with her like she’s my Aunt Liz,” Winkler recalled.

“There is no disconnect. There's no royalty,” he added. “There is just this lovely woman who knows about my children's books, the Detective Duck series."

The Royal Ascot is the epitome of British tradition, a week-long event packed with horse races at Ascot Racecourse. Each morning, members of the royal family make their grand arrival in horse-drawn carriages. Outside of the races, the weekend is all about glamour, history, and, of course, enjoying Champagne and cocktails on the lawn.

Though Royal Ascot takes place in June, King George's Day takes place at the same venue in July. This year for King George's Day, Queen Camilla stole the show, attending with her ex-husband, Andrew Parker-Bowles, to present the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes trophy. As always, she looked effortlessly chic in a white dress adorned with blue and gray florals, topped off with a stunning cream-colored rolled brimmed hat.

And here’s the sweet detail—Camilla’s hat was a subtle tribute to the late Princess Diana. The rolled brimmed hat was a staple in Diana’s iconic wardrobe, making Camilla’s choice a touching nod to the beloved former Princess of Wales.
