The 2025 Golden Globes are already off to a great (history-making) start for Denzel Washington. And for anyone wondering how, considering the awards haven't even started airing as of writing this, I'll enlighten you. The 70-year-old legendary actor was nominated for an award at this year's ceremony which officially makes him the most-nominated Black actor in Golden Globe history. Yes, you read that right. Denzel Washington has received the most nominations for a Black actor in all of the Golden Globe's 81 year history.
This year marks Washington’s 11th nomination, surpassing the previous record set by the legendary Sidney Poitier. He’s nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for his role in Gladiator II. In the film, Washington portrays Macrinus, a savvy Black businessman leading an army of gladiators. The plot takes an intriguing turn when Macrinus purchases Lucius (played by Paul Mescal), unaware that the young man is the illegitimate grandson of Emperor Marcus Aurelius.
