Is Denzel Washington gearing up for retirement?

Based on a recent interview it may appear that way, but thanks to one of his longtime collaborators, fans have at least one more iconic performance to look forward to. The two-time Oscar winner revealed that Ridley Scott’s upcoming Gladiator II (coming to theaters on November 22) “tremendously inspired” him, even as he considers wrapping up his acting career.

“There are very few films left that really interest me, and I have to be inspired by the filmmaker. Ridley definitely did that,” Denzel told Empire Magazine on August 23.

“We had a great experience the first time around, and here we are again. He’s engaged, excited about life and his next project—he’s an inspiration,” Denzel said, adding with a laugh, “We should all want to feel like that at 86.” Washington previously worked with the esteemed director in the 2007 drama American Gangster

In June, at the American Black Film Festival in Miami Beach, Washington dropped some pretty major hints about stepping back from acting.

“The things that are going on for me professionally behind the camera are as important to me now as in front of the camera,” he shared, per Bang Premier. “I think there’s less and less time I’ll be spending in front of the camera.”

While Denzel hasn’t officially confirmed if he’s retiring for good, there’s no shortage of his work for fans to revisit. From underrated gems like He Got Game to thrillers like The Little Things (which he starred in with his daughter), and of course, The Equalizer franchise, Denzel’s filmography is stacked.

And let’s not forget—his kids are absolutely killing it in Hollywood too. His son, John David Washington, has starred in blockbusters like Christopher Nolan’s Tenet and the beautifully raw Malcolm & Marie alongside Zendaya. He even earned a Golden Globe nomination for his lead role in Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman.

Behind the scenes, Denzel’s daughter Katia is making moves as a producer, with credits on films like Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained. And his younger two, Malcolm and Olivia, are also following in his footsteps, having worked on projects like She’s Gotta Have It and Chicago P.D., respectively.

So, while Denzel may be thinking about closing the curtain on his acting career, the Washington legacy is far from over. But let’s be real—we’ll always have a special place in our hearts for the OG.
