How We Chose the Best Washable Rugs

After researching top and emerging brands on the market, we took a look at reviews and editor recommendations, vetting the highest-rated options on: durability, ease of cleanliness, price/value, comfort and style.

Other factors we considered:

  • Is there some sort of backing—be it a built-in layer of rubber traction or a separate grippy rug pad—to prevent skidding?
  • Is it low-pile or high pile (aka how tall are those tiny fibers peeking out from your rug)? Lower pile heights tend to be lower maintenance and more child- and pet-friendly, while higher pile heights tend to hide the sight of dirt better while giving the room a plusher and more glamorous feel.
  • Is the rug machine washable or simply washable? The latter might require professional cleaning only.

Best Washable Living Room Rug

1.  NuLoom Modern Abstract Area Rug

What We Like:

  • non-slip backing
  • crushed velvet-esque texture
  • wide variety of sizes available to fit any space

What We Don't Like:

  • rug feels thin

NuLoom

Living rooms are high traffic areas, so we love that this rug's neutral pattern hides any spills or scuffs—while looking luxe. Its textured gray hue boasts the appearance of crushed velvet, adding depth to any room whether you opt for rectangular or round. Better yet, its low-pile polypropylene fibers repel dirt and moisture, making it easier to clean in between washes. It features a non-slip backing for seamless setup, and it comes in 14 sizes.

Because you can just throw it in the washing machine, one thing's worth noting: The rug itself is rather thin, so you may want to stick a rug pad underneath for extra cushion.

Fact: Running a pet-friendly Airbnb means your rugs get ruined, fast. It's something our VP of editorial learned the hard way—until she found this area rug. Muddy feet, wine spills and pet accidents have been no match for this durable number. A quick toss in the washing machine removed them all with ease, she says, though admits that the texture is a bit rough—more like an outdoor rug—and not as plush as she'd like. Still, its resilience after two years of wear has been impressive.

Magnolia x Loloi

Available in ten sizes, this Joanna Gaines collab isn't just for modern farmhouse-style McMansions in Waco. Its elegantly faded look works in traditional and eclectic homes alike, and should you spill something on it, cleanup is as easy as tossing it in the washer on the delicate cycle. The rug feels a bit plusher than others on this list, thanks to its power-loomed design (which, psst: consists of polyester fibers that are partially made from recycled bottles).

Reviewers across the board say it's "super soft" underfoot, and that it's "great quality," though warn that IRL, it's more mint than sage.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is the Best Washable Rug?

That largely depends on the space you’re looking to fill, however, some rugs are superior to others. Our top washable area rug pick, the NuLoom Modern Abstract Area Rug, ticks off nearly every box. It features a versatile, modern design, comes in several sizes, features integrated traction, and repels dirt and moisture in between washes.

How Do You Wash a Washable Rug?

Your best bet is to double check with each given rug brand for their specific instructions, but for the most part, they tend to follow the same method. First, remove any crumbs or dry debris with a vacuum on low-pile rugs. For higher-pile rugs, you’ll want to manually extract dirt or use a brush so as not to compromise the integrity of the long fibers. Then, use a soft cloth to spot-treat any visible signs of dirt with a solution of equal parts vinegar and warm water (mild detergent might be totally fine if you get the green light from their specs).
If you have access to one, a steam cleaner is also a suitable option for both low- and high-pile rugs. Then, pop it in the washing machine on a cold and gentle cycle. Follow that with a trip through the dryer on low. For optimal results, air dry your rug to retain its shape. Don’t be alarmed if the rug feels rougher than usual once it comes out—it should return to its original texture or fluffiness once you comb your fingers through it or resume normal foot traffic.
