Forget my (extensive) candle collection, my aromatherapy diffuser, my air purifier—when it comes to making my bedroom smell more alluring than an all-expenses-paid, childcare-included trip to Fiji, it all comes down to my laundry detergent. Specifically, The Laundress Beauty Sleep detergent. Described as a “velvety, spicy lullaby,” its scent is just the right mix of sultry and soothing, creating a surprisingly delightful environment for catching some zzz’s. And honestly, at $26 per bottle—good for 15 washes, according to the brand—I am so mad that I love it so much.

I’ve been covering all things home for over a decade, and I’ve tested dozens of detergents. Including more than a dozen in 2024 alone. I tend to always keep Tide on hand for heavy-duty stains, I recommend Dreft to new parents, and when it comes to scents, I’ve loved Bath & Body Works. But then this slim bottle entered my life, dang it.

Nobody needs a luxury detergent with a perfume-caliber fragrance, and while many I’ve tried make the act of standing over your washing machine more pleasant, the scent doesn’t really linger. The first time I washed my sheets with Beauty Sleep, however, the sophisticated blend of sandalwood, jasmine and lavender clung to my bedding without overpowering it. The scent slowly wafted through the room, so much so that two days later, any time I opened the door, I’d wonder, what is that amazing smell? OMG, did I leave a candle burning?!, only to swiftly remember it was…my detergent. (And, once in the room, my senses quickly adjusted to the spicy, woodsy aroma, so it wasn’t a nuisance or headache-inducer.)

Suddenly, infusing the scent in my bedding felt like an act of self-care; like the missing piece to creating a sanctuary at home. And the cheapo in me was pissed, because this meant I would be quickly reordering another bottle once this one runs out.

While The Laundress makes no claims that Beauty Sleep will help you rest easier, it did create a more soothing environment for me, and studies have shown that its key scents have made others feel less anxious. But what makes the splurge worthwhile for me is that it still contains The Laundress’s proprietary enzyme blend for tackling stains and dirt—two marks on my cream comforter came right out without spot treating. (I’ve also tried the Fabric Spray, and while it mirrors that delightful scent, I found it doesn’t linger—or scent a room quite as powerfully—as simply using the detergent.)

The Bottom Line: Is It Worth It?

What I Like

  • Soothing, perfume-caliber scent
  • Decent stain-fighting ability
  • Can subscribe for recurring deliveries (and get free shipping)

What I Don't Like

  • Pricey per wash
  • Easy to overpour (measuring cup sold separately)

While the economical home editor in me wants to use one bulk-buy detergent to clean everything, I’m all for springing for this little luxury, confining it to use on my bedding, specifically, so it becomes the signature scent of my bedroom. It produces a lot less soot than my candles, anyway.
