In the past few years, we’ve embraced everything from structured mid-century wingback chairs (think: Mad Men) to laid-back curves of ‘70s-inspired egg seats (think: That ‘70s Show). Then came the bouclé craze, where nubby, tactile textures reigned supreme in living rooms everywhere. But while bouclé is still hanging on, I predict it’ll feel passé within the next two years. In its place, 2025 is ushering in a fresh take on cozy living: the teddy chair.

What Exactly Is the Teddy Chair?

Imagine a chair that wraps you up like your favorite childhood stuffed animal. That’s what teddy chairs are all about (hence they’re teddy bear-inspired name). They’re defined by plush, tactile upholstery—think sherpa, natural sheepskin or faux shearling—that’s just as inviting to the touch as it is to the eye. What really sets this chair apart, though, is its shape. They embrace rounded, organic silhouettes: exaggerated arms, low-slung seats and curving backs that envelop you in comfort. Some designs even verge on playful, like the Mama Bear armchair designed by Pierre Yovanovitch (above). Its oversized "ears" at the headrest give it an almost cartoonish charm, anchored by rounded wooden feet for a contrast that feels elevated and sophisticated.

That said, this style isn’t new. It traces back to Danish designer Flemming Lassen’s Tired Man Lounge Chair (more on that below), first introduced in 1935. And while teddy chairs have evolved into many shapes and sizes since then, they all share a few defining traits. Again, it’s all about softness. With no sharp lines or harsh angles, their curved silhouettes are designed as if to “bear hug” you. The variations, however, are about size and armrests. One of the most popular iterations I’m seeing showcases high, gently flared wingback arms (think: a throne you actually want to sink into). Then, more recently, compact versions have popped up—often featuring wider seats and swivel bases, with pillow-like arms that appear to float. Regardless of the shape, however, plush fabrics and generous padding remain the hallmarks of a true teddy chair.

All in all, this trend reflects a broader shift happening in design—a collective pivot away from the industrial, hard-edged furniture that has dominated interiors for years. Now more than ever, people are craving softness, tactility and comfort for a home that feels emotionally grounding. It’s part of a larger movement I discussed in a recent trend article, where clinical minimalism is making way for what I like to call the anti-stress aesthetic. Furniture design seems to personify this transition, with materials that invite you to slow down and sink in. It's why the teddy chair trend comes as no surprise—they’re the perfect embodiment of form and function (wrapped in a very cozy package).

So without further ado, here are three teddy chairs I’m loving for 2025.

In a PureWow100 review, senior editor Dana Dickey said this chair is “like being in the lap of a big teddy bear toy.” She noted that it has a perfect back height for micro-naps, with curved wings that create a sound-buffering cocoon and ample neck support. “The slightly lifted edge of the chair makes it really comfortable to relax back into, and the height of the back is just right so I can lay my head back and have a nice shut-eye.” Better yet, the tightly woven, shearling fabric (available in taupe and white) is treated to resist stains and wear. In fact, Dickey’s chair has survived both dark denim and a dirty-pawed cockapoo—meaning it’s just as functional as it is au courant.

Next up: an option that won’t break the bank. This chair is upholstered in plush butterscotch shearling, so it’s as cozy as it looks, while the rounded back and armrests create a cocoon that’s perfect for curling up. It also has a sturdy wood construction and sinuous spring seat for just the right balance of cloud-like comfort—and the removable back pillow lets you tweak the feel to suit your lounging style. And for just under $250? It doesn’t get more budget-friendly than this.

Finally, we have the chair that spurred this trend. Danish designer Flemming Lassen designed the Tired Man Lounge Chair 1935 to feel “as warm and safe as a polar bear cub in the arms of its mother.” It’s upholstered in plush natural sheepskin with overstuffed curves and brass wheels—and layers of foam and pocket springs make it so comfortable, it might just justify the $11k+ splurge. That said, while replicas are everywhere, Eternity Modern’s version is the closest to the original in quality and construction. (It also includes the matching ottoman, which is a major bonus compared to the OG ottoman’s price.)
