Whether or not you've ever checked into a Ritz-Carlton hotel, you probably know that the rooms are stocked with top-of-the-line items. One of those items is a custom Stearns & Foster mattress. The brand—which you've likely seen in a commercial or two—is praised by sleep snobs for its approach to comfort and craftsmanship, and if a 5-star hotel like the Ritz agrees, well, the beds must be doing something right. Four months ago, I set out to test the quality of a Stearns & Foster for myself, trading in my bed-in-a-box for one of the brand's best-selling (and ultra-luxe) models, the Stearns & Foster Estate mattress (from $2,499). There's no denying it's a splurge, but if you're in the market for a hotel-quality bed, I'd say it's worth the investment. Read on for my full review.

What Is Stearns & Foster Known for?

As I mentioned, Stearns & Foster is behind the custom Ritz-Carlton bed, but the brand was renowned for its craftsmanship and quality long before that. Every mattress is hand-stitched *and* hand-signed by certified craftsmen using premium materials, from plush memory foam to patented coils that resist sagging, helping to extend each mattress's lifespan. They also come with a decade-long limited warranty, so you can rest easy should any issues arise.

What I Like

  • Keeps me cool
  • Feels super soft, like I'm sleeping on a cloud
  • Easy setup (I didn't have to lift a finger, and they took my old mattress)
  • Curves to my body so I don't have to keep readjusting my position

What I Don't Like

  • Steep price tag
  • Sometimes I have to sit up to get a good blood flow to my arm
  • Not compatible with a box spring

Stearns & Foster

What Is the Stearns & Foster Estate Mattress?

While all of Stearns & Foster's mattresses take comfort to the next level, the Estate collection "provides sleepers with enhanced comfort that will make them feel like they’re on vacation every night,” according to Ali Bowen, Stearns and Foster Brand Director.

After all, it is made up of *five* layers, including a quilted Tencel soft pillow top that is designed to wick away moisture and Tempur-Indulge Memory Foam, which is designed to offer "a perfect combination" of pressure relief, durability and weightlessness. And if you're a side sleeper? You'll be obsessed with the precision edge—aka the high-density innerspring border—which will keep you supported while preventing sagging over time.

Still, out of all five layers, the fifth one, on the very bottom, known as the AirVent System, is what really sets this bedroom beauty apart. It's basically a system of ventilated coils and four (visible!) AirVents that work together to increase the mattress's airflow by pulling warm air away from your body so you stay calm, cool and collected throughout the night.

The Set Up

Every Stearns & Foster mattress comes with the brand's free in-home delivery service, which includes shipping, setup (on your preferred date and time) and removal of your old bed.

Your order does not come with a power base, flat foundation or platform bed, which is needed to deliver optimal comfort and support. So, if you don't already have one, you'll want to order one (either at Stearns & Foster or somewhere else) before your mattress comes. Luckily, I have a platform bed, so I didn't have to purchase one separately. However, I did have to get rid of my box spring since it isn't compatible with the mattress.

On my delivery day, the crew arrived on time and began by removing my old mattress. Then, they brought in my new mattress and set it up on my platform bed so I didn't have to lift a finger. And the whole process took less than 20 minutes, so I didn't have to clear my schedule.

My Experience Sleeping on the Stearns & Foster Estate Mattress

From the very first night, I could tell the difference between my old bed and the Stearns & Foster Estate mattress. For starters, it was a lot higher than my old mattress, but I was expecting that considering the five-layer construction. It also felt way softer and more weightless than my old bed (which was more on the firm side), so I'd say its Pillow Top Soft feel definitely lived up to the hype.

The ventilating air pockets, which look like small dents on the mattress top, were also new to me. If I had to describe it, it felt like almost every part of my body just melted into the mattress, from my feet to my shoulders, so it felt like one big, soft hug. My old, medium-firm mattress kept me laying in one straight line, putting pressure on my body so I had major issues with blood flow. I actually used to wake up in the middle of the night throbbing in pain because my arm or leg went numb. But since the Estate Mattress curves to my form, I haven't experienced that once.

I also used to toss and turn a lot on my old mattress. I'm a hot sleeper and would get overheated easily (sometimes I would even wake up in a sweat), but that hasn't been the case since I made the transition. Needless to say, I've been sleeping way better on the Stearns & Foster Estate bed, and I'm not the only one—my boyfriend also says he feels more comfortable and supported through the night.

Clearly, I'm a huge fan of this upgrade. Almost every day, I wake up feeling refreshed and sweat-free with *no* leg pain and barely any arm pain (unless I sleep weirdly), which is a dream come true since my old mattress wasn't very cooling and didn't really promote good blood flow.

Stearns & Foster

Bottom Line: Is the Stearns & Foster Estate Mattress Worth It?

After four months of sweet dreams on the Stearns & Foster Estate, I can confidently say that this bed is worth every penny. Everything from its cooling technology and soft pillow top to its AirVents and Tempur-Indulge memory foam makes me feel like I'm living the suite live at a 5-star hotel (the only thing missing is room service). If you struggle with tossing and turning, overheating and blood flow, I'd say this is one luxury worth investing in since it promises perfect snoozing for years to come.
