I lost my Superhost status, my search ranking tanked and my bookings dried up—all because of a rug. For the past four years, I’ve been running an Airbnb, and things had been going great (save for the rogue “uh, someone just backed their car through your fence!!!” message or, you know, learning your home’s in the direct path of a hurricane). And then I got my first four-star review, all because of my outdoor rug. It’d gotten shabby, and I hadn’t realized just how badly.

“You need a Ruggable,” my cleaning service declared. “They’re the only ones that can handle Airbnbs.”

Admittedly, I’d gone cheap with rugs in the past, ordering regular outdoor rugs and washable ones from Target, Wayfair and Walmart. I needed something more durable, and I didn’t want it to have that plasticky or scratchy feel that many outdoor rugs have. So I heeded their advice—and I’m so glad I did. Here’s why.

My Review of the Ruggable Outdoor Rug

The Setup & Washing Is Clever, Though It Takes Getting Used To

ruggable

Like Ruggable’s indoor rugs, its outdoor styles feature a two-part system: a rug pad and a cover that adheres like Velcro to the pad. The company offers simple, clear instructions to unfurl the rug and get it set up, but it’s kind of like lining up wallpaper seams—it takes a little getting used to. But it’s easy to peel up and reattach. This setup provides additional cushioning, but it also allows the cover to be easily tossed in the wash.

That said, the bigger the size of your rug, the harder it is to adhere to the rug pad (it’s more of a two-person job) and the harder it is to wash. I technically can cram my 6’x9’ into my 3.5-cubic-foot washing machine, but barely. At sizes bigger than 5’x7’, I’d recommend taking it to a commercial laundromat, or peeling the cover off, hanging it on a fence and rinsing it down with a hose and letting it dry, like you would other outdoor rugs. You definitely want to consult the brand’s washing guide and the size of your machine before ordering.

That said, its lighter weight makes it easier to hang, and dirt washes off easily, so I find it less of a hassle than traditional outdoor rugs. (On that note, while the cover is a bit thin, it still feels soft underfoot, particularly with the pad.)

There’s an Option to Fit Every Size Space (and Aesthetic)

ruggable

Honestly, Ruggable’s variety makes it best in class. Outdoor rugs can often skew cheesy or bland, but Ruggable truly has a style for every taste (with 123 options to consider, as of press time). They run the gamut, from Nancy Meyers-ish coastal to abstract-modern and more understated, quiet-luxury neutrals, with sizes ranging from 2.5’x7’ runners to sweeping 9’x12’ carpets.

They Instantly Elevate Your Space

I chose the Josephine Sunrise Rug, part of a collaboration with Jungalow founder Justina Blakeney, and the bold, boho style has been a showstopper. I’ve received multiple compliments on it, even getting three DMs when I shared a pic to my Instagram Stories from strangers asking where they could find one. And I’m no influencer. The styles are just that striking.

While cheaper outdoor rugs’ patterns felt stamped onto the fabric, only to start wearing away after a few months’ use, in my experience so far, they’re as vibrant as ever. I worried the daily wear of dogs running in and out would immediately show in such a high-contrast, intricate pattern, but so far, so good. I credit that to their water-resistant, fade-resistant polyester-weave material.

The Bottom Line: Are Ruggable’s Outdoor Rugs Worth It?

What We Like

  • water- and mold-/mildew-resistant
  • machine washable
  • easy to sweep clean/maintain
  • great variety of sizes and styles
  • vibrant designs

What We Don't Like

  • pad and rug top can be tricky to line up at first
  • larger sizes may not fit in your machine
  • pricey

ruggable

At $409* for a 6’x9’, this is an investment compared to the $100 to $140 I’d spent in the past. But those rugs typically needed to be replaced after a year and a half. I’m three months in, so we’ll see how things hold up a year from now, though I’ve heard from multiple Ruggable owners that their indoor rugs, in high-traffic areas, have held up for over four years without issues. I expect a little less longevity from an outdoor rug, particularly in Florida, but the early (lack of) wear is promising.

Overall, given the designs and overall quality of construction, I’d say they’re absolutely worth it—especially if they help me reclaim Superhost status.
