I Virtually Redesigned My Living Room While Social Distancing & It Was Surprisingly Easy

In this age of social distancing, we’re all finding ways to keep ourselves busy. For me, that’s meant a lot of reading, Melissa Wood Health workouts and walks with my dog and husband. But with all this time spent inside, I’ve been paying a lot more attention to how our space is decorated. More specifically, what bothers me about it.

Prior to this whole situation, my husband and I were already entertaining the idea of purchasing a new couch and looking to find a seating solution that’s more conducive to conversation.

Before

As we’re currently awaiting the arrival of our first child, I was adamant that we needed a couch with performance fabric and we both agreed that while our living room looks fine, it doesn’t quite look complete. Our logic was that we’d be spending a lot more time at home with the baby and we wanted a space that felt comfortable and uniquely us.

I consider myself to be pretty decent with home décor, but we’ve now been in our home for a year and a half and I’m ready for it to just be done. So, when I came across Modsy’s virtual interior design service last month, it felt like fate. Little did I know how necessary the virtual aspect of this service would soon become.

The Redesign

I kicked things off by filling out a simple survey. Modsy asked what room I wanted to revamp, what my budget, style and preferred package was (I did premium) and asked for the measurements of my room and any furniture we planned to keep. The day after I finally measured everything out, I hopped on the phone with an established designer about what I envisioned for our new and improved living room. We talked about inspirations, pain points and priorities and within 24 hours, I had three different room renderings that were spot on.

My husband and I immediately fell in love with one light and bright rendering that utilized our favorite blue-and-white striped chairs, as well as our TV console, rug and mirror. The layout was exactly what we were hoping for and the designer took into consideration all of our special requests (performance fabric, moveable seating and kid-friendly rounded edges). After a throw pillow and side table tweak, we were ready to move forward and commit to the design.

The Finished Product (well, Almost)

With the state of everything (and the fact that I’m just three weeks from my due date), we were happy to see that we can purchase the items suggested by our decorator at our own pace. While we haven’t quite gotten the ball rolling just yet (the couch will be first), Modsy was kind enough to provide me with a photo of what everything will look like once it’s set up. Suffice it to say, I’m obsessed.

If we’re going to be stuck inside for a while, we may as well do everything we can to get cozy, right?
