After a grueling day of hauling boxes up the four-story walkup of my new apartment, I assumed the “Dad in Home Depot” stance and looked around. “I apologize to you in advance,” I said to my wallet. See, as someone who covers design trends for a living, it’s kind of my job to find and test the best homewares on the market (or that’s what I tell myself as I watch my bank account dwindle). Not to mention that I’m basically salivating over this season’s interiors—from sunken seating and luxe chocolate brown furniture to checkerboard printed everything.

Yet, in order to avoid an Augustus Gloop in Willy Wonka situation, I’ve taken a capsule-wardobe approach to curating my apartment with investment-worthy pieces. Think: timeless decor, furniture, artwork and splurge-worthy gadgets and appliances that will save you hundreds down the line. So out of the thousands of products I’ve seen this fall, see below for 15 items that are actually worth adding to your cart this season. (And yes, 15 is my idea of scaling back.)

7 Interior Design Trends for Fall 2022

1. Maison Margiela 'REPLICA' By The Fireplace Scented Candle

This guy has been on my wish list for a while. Like a cartoon character following the whiff of a freshly baked pie, I was lured into my roommate’s bedroom by this candle’s woodsy notes of chestnut accord and red berries. Now all I can think about is lighting up this scent, wrapping myself in a blanket and (re)binging Mad Men on a chilly November afternoon.

2. Irregular Checkerboard Bolster Pillow

The one design trend I can’t get enough of this season? Checkerboard patterns and ‘70s-inspired hues. This woven bolster pillow elevates the trend with a taupe, two-toned pattern that can blend with my other accent pillows.

3. Bissell Little Green Machine

While I love how my white bouclé sectional pops against the exposed brick, I hate how hard it is to keep this thing clean. Enter: this TikTok-viral cleaning machine. Indeed, this best-seller scored 90 points out of 100 in a PureWow100 review—and after watching it restore an “absolutely disgusting truck” to its former glory, I’m sold.

4. Groove Terracotta Table Lamp

ICYMI, this year’s answer to contemporary gold- and brass-rimmed vessels are oversized, organic silhouettes in artisanal finishes. I love how this terracotta table lamp hits the mark with a curved base and ribbed texture wrapping that lends a warm, vintage-inspired feel.

5. Kodak Luma 350 Smart Projector

Upon seeing this TikTok, my mission was clear: Transform my NYC rooftop into a cozy, make-shift movie theater (and if my landlord asks, I’ve never been up there). Luckily, all I need is a mini projector to make it happen—and this number by Kodak scored 87 points out of 100 in a PureWow100 review.

6. Saint-Tropez Boucherie Photography Print

My first thought when I walked into my new abode? These white walls are going to need some *personality.* Hence, why I’m adding this framed print. Not only have I been a long-time fan of Slim Aarons, but I love how this photo captures the daily essence of Parisian street life. Not to mention that it totally balances my vintage-inspired style with my roommates’ luxe-Euro backgrounds.

7. Alpaca Basketweave Throw

While I’m sad to see the Coastal Grandmother trend go, I’m planning on repurposing the look with Jenni Kayne’s cozy Cali style. More specifically, with this chunky alpaca throw, which features a super-soft basketweave texture and fringed edge details (making it the ultimate transitional piece).

8. The Laundress Wool & Cashmere Shampoo

I’d just like to go on record and say that I would literally donate a kidney for Laundress’ stain-removing solution. So naturally, when I saw the brand released a delicate, custom-tailored formula that treats knits and sweaters, I knew it was the one thing my cashmere cardigans were missing this season.

9. Genevieve Headboard in Zuma White

Fall, especially fall 2022, is all about chunky, textured fabrics—including bouclé, sherpa and chenille. Not only does this headboard break up my bedroom’s stark white walls (without overwhelming the space), but the fabric is so cozy, it feels like an oversized pillow when I’m propped up in bed.

Ruggable

10. Ruggable with Jonathan Adler Hush Doormat

Looking for a statement piece that can wow guests before they walk in the door? This is it. Plus, aside from its fabulous Jonathan Adler design, the doormat is totally machine washable (so you won’t have to worry about asking your guests to take their shoes off at the door).

Smeg

11. Smeg Retro Style Coffee Maker

Simple, effective and oh-so-chic on my quartzite countertops, this SMEG drip coffee maker is quickly becoming my favorite kitchen accessory. Not to mention that it can actually produce a great cup of coffee (without all the bells and whistles).

Dipytique

12. Diptyque Feu De Bois Candle

Fall is candle season, and even with my capsule collection approach, I can’t limit myself to just one scent. And if I had to stick to just two picks, my second would be Diptyque’s Feu De Bois. Its warm, woodsy accord creates a sophisticated scent, I love how it can elevate my bedroom dresser’s vintage vibe (see number 14 on this list).

13. Reese Full-Length Mirror

When it comes to floor mirrors, I find it best to keep things classic (especially if you’re spending upwards of $350). I love this textural gold-leaf number for its rounded corners and a concave design. Plus, it has a narrow, 15.75-inch width which would be the perfect finishing touch to my tiny entryway.

14. Crosley Retrospect Suitcase Turntable

Next on the list of apartment decor: vintage-inspired staples. Call me an old soul, but I love nothing more than blasting the Rolling Stones or Grateful Dead while I’m getting ready for a night out with friends. So, it only makes sense that I’d complement the throwbacks with a nostalgic accessory. Not only do I love this one for its retro-inspired suitcase design, but it’s Bluetooth- and record-compatible (so it works with those records you stole from your parent’s basement—sorry, dad).

15. Pique Backrest Pillow

Finally—a backrest pillow that doesn’t automatically scream, “college dorm room.” I love how Peacock Alley (AKA one of my favorite luxury bedding brands) elevated the shape with a corded trim for a tailored look.
