If you’ve recently found yourself scrolling Avocado Hacks at 4 a.m., we’re right there with you. Over the past year, TikTok has educated us, inspired us and entertained us while stuck at home. As a result, the Gen-Z-based platform has created a seismic shift in the way trends are defined and perceived. “[TikTok’s] passionate Gen Z user base is leaving an enormous mark on the cultural landscape, especially in its dedication to curating eccentric new styles,” says Madison Chestang of Strike Magazine.

These Are the 7 Top Home Trends of 2021, According to TikTok

After all, Gen-Z has used the app as a vehicle to broadcast some of our most beloved decor trends, including the nugget couch, candle bending and cottagecore aesthetic. “Rather than restricting themselves to ‘normal’ forms of inspiration, TikTokers look anywhere from childhood nostalgia to classic literature to add a taste of whimsy to their worldview,” Chestang explains. Well, we’re happy to report an emerging home trend that TikTokers of all ages can get behind: macrame.

“The art of macramé is believed to have originated with 13th-century Arabic weavers, who used hand-looms to make what they called ‘migramah,’ or ‘fringe,’” explains Sarah Schreiber of Martha Stewart Weddings. “The fact that the weave style is still trending today is a testament to its versatility and cool factor.”

Besides its historical context, we love how the macrame trend combines old and new to bring texture and variety to any space. According to Marisa Casciano, a lifestyle writer at Elite Daily, “Google's search data saw a 3,200 percent increase in the term ‘macrame knot guide’ in the past year in the United States and notes that ‘macrame plant hanger tutorial’ is considered a breakout term, since it's been so popular.”

If you’re not into the whole #diy thing, we’ve got you covered. Here are some of our favorite macrame wall hangings that are Gen-Z approved:

1. Oversized Macramé Wall Hanging

2. Jute Macramé Plant Hanger

3. Macramé Hanging Shelf
