testing the best washable rug brands
Dara Katz/Candace Davison

Washable rugs are everywhere these days. You’ve undoubtedly heard of Ruggable, Revival and the like, but now that every major retailer—Target, Walmart and Amazon included—all sell variations, it’s hard to know which ones are worth the spend.

Trust me, because I’ve made more than a few mistakes here: As an Airbnb host for four years, I’ve found rugs (and pillowcases) are the fastest things to get stained, worn down and just plain nasty. And the times I’ve gone with cheaper rugs are the times I’ve learned, quickly, what a wide variance in quality exists. Paying $75 for a 5-foot-by-7-foot rug doesn’t feel like such a deal when the carpet is as scratchy as fuzzy sandpaper and the printed-on “design” disappears after treading on it for two months. (This actually happened to me.)

As I started researching which brands offered quality rugs that lasted, I realized I’m not alone in this struggle. I consulted with several PureWow editors who have tested and tried washable rugs over the years, as well as tested newer brands over the past four months, to bring you the best washable rugs our team has come across, in terms of design, quality, ease of cleanup and overall durability.

How I Vetted the Best Washable Rugs

Ease of washing—and their overall stain-resistance—is a key consideration here, but it’s far from the only one. I also considered how the rugs wear over time (and general quality of construction), as well as their overall durability, their comfort underfoot, value and aesthetics. Because a rug you can easily toss in the washing machine isn’t worth it if it’s a total eyesore that you hate to even step across.

All of the rugs tested had been placed in high-traffic areas, exposed to spills and messes, and had to have been spot-treated, vacuumed and washed to assess their resilience. They’ve been evaluated at least four months after initial setup, just to see how they held up. Recommendations were often cross-referenced with other PureWow editors who owned a rug from the brand to confirm their experiences were similar.

Every brand was scored on our PureWow100 scale, and brands that scored silver or gold were deemed worthy of the title of best washable rugs.

Before You Buy, Keep This in Mind…

No matter where you shop, you’ll want to consider whether your washing machine can handle the size of the rug you’re looking to buy. The typical 4ish-cubic-foot washing machine can handle most rugs up to 6’x9’—though some charts suggest 8’x10’ is OK. In my experience testing, anything larger than a 5’x7’ often needed to be folded up like origami to fit in the machine, and even then, it’s a struggle. Once the rug was in, the machine did its job and the stains were removed. But for anything larger than a 5”x7’, I’d head to a laundromat and spare yourself from fighting with the machine.

They’re the industry leader for a reason: If you cannot find a Ruggable rug to suit your aesthetic, maybe you should stick to bare hardwood. The brand offers a whopping 1,651 options, as of publication, with sizes ranging from 2’x3’ to 10’x14’. And the designs! Oh, the designs. If quiet luxury’s your thing, check out their Goop collaboration. My Anthro, boho friends, look to Justina Blakeney (she designed the outdoor number pictured). Traditionalists? You’ll love Gracie. Abstract? Art deco? Coastal Scandifornia?! There’s something for you too.

As diverse as the styles and sizes are, Ruggable is also consistently high-quality. Three editors have tested indoor and outdoor rugs alike, low and high pile, over the past five years, and have been continually impressed by the rugs’ resilience.

Ruggable uses a two-part system to make their rugs easy to clean: There’s a rug cover that’s machine-washable and a pad underneath, which acts as both a cushion and stain barrier for your floors. The cover is water resistant, which makes it naturally repel stains, and it attaches, almost Velcro-like, to the pad, so it doesn’t slip around. To wash it, you peel off the cover and wash according to the care instructions,

They aren’t the cheapest on the market, but you won’t be replacing them a year from now—even if you Airbnb your home and your guest’s dog decides carpets are his preferred potty (not that I’m speaking from personal experience or anything).

The challenge with many washable rugs is that you can immediately tell they’re washable—they just have a flat, utilitarian look to them. Revival excels at plush styles that look and feel like traditional rugs. The collection is tightly curated, with a professional construction that looks pulled straight from the pages of Elle Decor or Architectural Digest. “Overall, the designs are smart, subtle, modern and stylish,” executive editor Dara Katz says, adding that Revival’s commitment to offering an “affordable price point for its quality, an aspect built into the company’s ethos, is very attractive.” (The brand sells directly to consumer to keep costs down and regularly visits its suppliers to ensure the quality of the rugs and the workers’ conditions.)

Katz also appreciated that the Maru rug, shown, is easy to clean, though she noted that the style she owns is not water resistant, so she is a bit more careful about spills. (She also line-dries the style to preserve its plushness.) On that note, washing is pretty straightforward; unlike Ruggable and Tumble’s two-part system, there’s just the rug, so you toss the whole thing in the washer.

Fast Facts

  • How Do You Wash Them? Machine wash on the delicate setting with 1 tablespoon detergent; rugs sized 5x8’ and up are recommended for use with a commercial washing machine, and for 9’x12’ rugs, Revival recommends spot or dry cleaning

A newcomer that received multiple rave reviews from editors, Tumble features all OEKO-TEX certified rugs in 80+ hand-illustrated designs. Like Ruggable, it features a rug pad and a washable cover, only their designs feature corners you tuck the pad onto, and their pad is a bit cushier. (Reviewers described the pad as almost a play mat-like feel, with an absorbent squish.) “It is extremely easy to clean,” says editor-in-chief Jillian Quint, who owns the Adelaide. “It’s less bulky in my washing machine than a duvet cover.” That’s an important pro here, as many toss-the-whole-rug-in styles can be pretty tricky to actually fit in a household washing machine.

Tumble also offers a great range of sizes and designs—from runners to 9’x12’ rugs, with styles ranging from Persian to modern—and it’s held up well over time, remaining stain-free after six months’ use.

Quint does warn that sometimes the corners of the rug pop off the pad, and that the rug can bunch up if furniture is moved around on it too frequently. Still, its affordability and overall quality—given its price point—make it a standout choice.

Admittedly, Target’s foray into washable rugs is pretty limited, but their options have held up the best among the big box retailers I’ve tried. This Persian-style accent rug survived a soak from Hurricane Ian, and after washing, was as good as new. (Meanwhile, two other rugs needed to be replaced for lingering odors.) Most washable accent rugs at this price point feel like the design is stamped on, and within a few months, it disappears in high-trafficked spots. This wasn’t the case here; several months later, it’s as vibrant as ever.

That said, the design options are quite limited—44 styles, as of publication, and most are 2’x3’ accent rugs or runners, though there are a couple designs that go up to 8’x10’. On the plus side, most offerings fit in a household washing machine (though you may want to double-check your cubic footage before attempting the 4’x6’ or larger).

Washing the accent rug is as easy as it gets. Like Revival, you simply toss the whole rug in. It offers decent padding in the kitchen, though it does slip around a bit, so I’d recommend sticking rug tape or another grip to hold it in place.
