The key to better sex (are you listening now?) is unlearning the bad sex-ed we’ve all been taught: the abstinence, the aversion to discussing pleasure, the socially ingrained tabooing of the topic. At least, that’s what Rebecca Alvarez Story—cofounder of the new clean intimate-care brand Bloomi—wholeheartedly believes.
A certified sexologist, Story earned her master’s in Sexuality Studies from UC Berkeley before becoming one of the few Latines in the U.S. to raise over $1 million in venture capital. Her goal in cofounding Bloomi: normalizing sexual wellness in the U.S. and Mexico—especially in the Latine community—promoting sexual inclusivity and accessibility, and focusing on clean, plant-based intimacy products. The offering has grown since their first product, Bloomi Arousal Oil, to now include a line of 12 vibrators, toys and lubes, all packaged with sustainable, compostable and recyclable materials.
Last year, Target took note and Bloomi became the first Latine-led brand to launch in the company’s sexual wellness aisle. Now, Story is focused on expanding her brand while building up other Black and Latine-led start-ups.
“Just five minutes a day of pleasure—listening to music you love, a massage, self-pleasure, laughing—can improve your mind-body connection, boost your mood and help you enjoy intimacy more,” Story told us.
