If there’s one thing we know for certain, it’s that old trends don’t die hard. In fact, we’ve continued to see a resurgence of nearly all past nostalgic relics, such as the low-rise look (emotional baggage in tow), Juicy Couture tracksuits, pearlcore and more. Hot off the TikTok press for this summer’s ultimate cool girl trend is none other than parachute pants.

But don’t take our word for it, besides prominent TikTok influencers deeming them the “it” pant for summer and generating 1 billion views (yeah, you heard that right) on videos featuring the trend, searches for “parachute pants” are hitting peak popularity on Google Trends as well.

The 4 Hottest Hat Trends of Summer ‘22 (Plus 1 Style to Retire For Now)

Wait, So What Exactly Are Parachute Pants?

We’re so glad you asked. TikTokers are loving this lightweight, baggy style that could be deemed a relative to cargo pants. But unlike the structured, utility-influenced cargo pant, parachute pants have a loose, drawstring fit at the waist and ankle (like a literal parachute). Originally popularized in the ‘80s as the harem pant by the hip-hop and breakdancing scene (thanks, MC Hammer!), we’re now seeing a modern-day rebirth of the billowy pants courtesy of TikTok.

How Do You Style Them?

With a more tapered fit and less exaggerated drop crotch than the ‘80s version, modern parachute are a touch less intimidating to wear, but no less statement-making.

The flowy, nylon-esque material is so bold that we suggest keeping it simple up top. Channel your inner Bridgerton and pair it with your favorite corset top like Madison Beer above, throw on a form-fitting graphic tee for a grunge look or stay simple with a neutral-colored tube top. If you want to cover up a bit more, we adore how celebrity stylist, Veneda Carter created a monotone, effortlessly cool look by throwing on a moss green quilted jacket.

While most TikToks videos show the pants worn extremely low-waist, the adjustable drawstring means you can also wear these as high-waist pants if that’s more your style. (Mom jean lovers can breathe a sigh of relief.)

Whether you’re a ‘90s gal at heart or are testing out a look that’s completely new to you, these drawstring pants are bound to make a statement.

We adore this style for summer because, not only does it hit the parachute trend, but hot pink is so in right now. We love how these parachute pants don’t have too much going on with pockets and flare because the color speaks for itself. Go full monochromatic with this look and turn those heads.
