Shopping for clothes that fit when you’re 5’4” and under can be a challenge. I should know, both because I fit into that category (I’m 5’4” on a good day), and because I’m kind of a petite expert, having interviewed profesh stylists about assembling a petite capsule wardrobe, and having crowdsourced the best jeans and petite trench coats for short women. After all, no matter how many boots with heels you wear (including the most comfortable boots), at some point you're going to want to sport your coat with sneakers or flats, and said coat needs to be the right length. Not only that, but finding the best winter coats for short women comes with other challenges, such as:

  • Does the silhouette drown our smaller frames in yards of bulky fabric?
  • Do the sleeves always have to be cuffed?
  • Is the hem practically dragging on the ground without platform heels?

If any of these complaints are familiar to you, fear not. I've researched the best winter coats for short women and have curated this list of on-trend, quality and pretty affordable options (most under $300) for winter 2025.

Best Puffer Coat

1. Aritzia Super Puff Long Coat

What We Like

  • water-resistant
  • machine washable
  • certified for -40 degree temps

What We Don't Like

  • short sizing only comes in black
  • hood isn't removable

Aritzia

I love this coat, which is so fashion-forward because of the high-gloss water-resistant body, and also figure-flattering, since it comes in three lengths. The petite is recommended for under 5'3", so at a little over that height and 125 pounds, I fit into a regular small size, which gave me the option of choosing one of the extended colors (a warm and glossy brown). Basically, when I wear this coat, I feel like I'm a chic Parisienne—but at a way more affordable price point than Bogner or Canadian Goose.

Fast Facts

  • Size Range: 3XS to XL, short, regular and tall
  • Materials: 100 percent nylon exterior; Fill: 90 percent responsibly sourced goose down, 10 percent goose feathers; Cuffs: 80 percent nylon, 20 percent elastane
  • Colors: in short sizing, black only; in regular sizing, six high-gloss colors

Best Faux Fur

2. Lamarque Linnea Jacket

What We Like

  • side seam pockets
  • ultra soft
  • rich color

What We Don't Like

  • only single snap front closure
  • dry clean only

Lamarque

This cuddly faux fur coat is my vote for staying warm during upcoming snow flurries. This car coat is roomy enough to layer sweaters underneath, yet has enough swing in its design to wear tossed over your shoulders. It also features side seam pockets which are handy, but don't add bulk. And there's a central snap button closure up front.

Fast Facts

  • Size Range: XS to XL
  • Materials: polyester
  • Colors: mink brown, bitter chocolate

Best Quilted

3. Everlane The Long Quilted Liner

What We Like

  • lightweight
  • snaps and a zipper
  • machine washable

What We Don't Like

  • arms can run long

Everlane

Whether you choose to layer this rich, army green-colored coat liner over a chunky knit or slip it on over a basic long-sleeved tee, the recycled quilted polyester will give you all of the warmth and none of the bulk. This is a longer length of Everlane's popular jacket length liner that, when sized down, looks sleek.

  • Size Range: XXS to XXL
  • Materials: recycled polyester
  • Colors: green, black, navy

Best Tailored Fit

4. J. Crew Petite New Lady Day Topcoat

What We Like

  • sophisticated design
  • bright colors

What We Don't Like

  • waist may hit too high for long-waisted petites
  • wool is stiff at first

J. Crew

J.Crew’s petite section is a gold mine for finding on-trend, stylish options that are proportioned exactly right, from the length (34 3/4 inch) to the buttonhole placement to the sleeve length (32 1/4 inch). Shorties are already familiar with the flattering powers of an A-line skirt or dress. The same concept applies to outerwear. This coat has a tailored fit through the chest and a slight swing shape on its bottom half—so it gives the illusion of length.

Fast Facts

  • Size Range: 00 to 12, Petite, Classic and Tall
  • Materials: 75 percent wool/25 percent polyamide.
  • Colors: white, red, light pink, hot pink, light blue, black

Best Cashmere Blend

5. Banana Republic Pura Wrap Coat

What We Like

  • fully lined
  • wide lapels and collar

What We Don't Like

  • pricey
  • oversize style means sizing down

Banana Republic

Mmmm, a cashmere blend coat is sheer elegance. And when paired with a wrap style, it's giving Big City glamour. Usually, we petites have a hard time not looking like we're wearing a bathrobe. Not so with this coat, which though oversized through the arm width and lapels, is available in petite so that the arm and body length fall at just the right places (just beyond the wrist and below the knee). The cherry color is especially newsy, but will look great on you for years to come. I'm calling it: This is the investment coat of the season.

Fast Facts

  • Size Range: XXS to L, Petite and Regular
  • Materials: shell is 90 percent virgin wool, 10 percent cashmere; lining is viscose rayon
  • Colors: deep cherry, black, camel

Best Oversized

6. Petite Studio Harriet Coat

What We Like

  • warm, lightweight fabric
  • quality marbled buttons
  • deep welt pockets

What We Don't Like

  • limited colorways
  • no plus sizes

Petite Studio

Introducing my go-to winter 2024 coat. I'm shocked at how well it fits, giving the trending oversize vibes of the season (channeling Taylor Swift!) but not swallowing my under-5'4" frame. The body is wider than I usually wear my coats, as are the sleeves, but the lapels and V-neck open right at my mid-chest, so it doesn't look like I'm wearing a man's borrowed coat. And the fabric is wool with a touch of alpaca and silk, so it has a bit of that rich-looking softness and lightweight silk warmth. Meanwhile, the half-lining is the coat tailoring I didn't know I needed—the chest area and sleeves alone are lined, so the whole coat never feels too bulky (and always flares nicely when I walk, thanks to the small side slits.

Fast Facts

  • Size Range: XXS to L Petite
  • Materials: body is 80 percent wool, 10 percent mulberry silk, 10 percent alpaca; lining is 55 percent polyester, 45 percent viscose
  • Colors: camel, grey

Best Plaid

7. Avec Les Filles Notch-Lapel Plaid Coat

What We Like

  • slim fit
  • runs slightly small (great for petites)
  • lightweight

What We Don't Like

  • dry clean only
  • no plus sizes

Avec Les Filles

This coat has everything—it's giving Rory Gilmour with a dash of horse girl aesthetic, and all for petites in a wearable single-breasted, notch-collar mid-calf length. It's from Avec Les Filles, a brand with roots in Los Angeles, which explains why the mostly polyester coat is lightweight enough for milder winters. But the plaid body is all East Coast preppie chic—as is the versatility of the silhouette, which looks as good tossed on over jeans or a mini as it does on a silk dinner dress.

Fast Facts

  • Size Range: XXS to XL
  • Materials: body is 89 percent polyester, 11 percent wool; lining is polyester
  • Colors: neutral plaid

Best Waterproof

8. Seasalt Cornwall River Sea Waterproof Coat

What We Like

  • two-way zip/snap closure
  • fleece lining

What We Don't Like

  • pricey

Seasalt Cornwall

Crafted with organic cotton that’s both waterproof and windproof, and fleece-lined to amp up the cozy factor, this coat is as durable as it is stylish—and it comes at the recommendation of 5'2" Rachel Bowie, PureWow Senior Director of Special Projects and Royals. “This is my go-to. It’s warm, practical and stylish. Whenever I wear it, I think, ‘I’m not just a mom, I’m a cool mom."

Best Parka

9. Grace Karin Winter Anorak

What We Like

  • faux fur hood trim
  • affordable
  • range of colors

What We Don't Like

  • pockets are thin

Grace Karin

Perhaps you want the lightweight warmth of a puffer but without the extra heft? This is your alternative. I'm impressed with the fleece-lined body and how the fabric is lightly padded with silk wadding. There's also a waist drawstring, which I choose to wear for a more A-line silhouette, but it can be cinched for an hourglass shape. And the faux fur trim on the roof looks so ski bunny, it's charming.

Fast Facts

  • Size Range: S to 3X
  • Materials: polyester, viscose, elastane
  • Colors: 13 colors including neutrals and brights

Best Lightweight

10. L.L. Bean Adirondack Barn Coat

What We Like

  • petite sizing
  • plaid flannel inner fabric

What We Don't Like

  • back waistband might be too high for long-waisted petites

L.L. Bean

Water-resistant and cozy thanks to thick, flannel lining, this coat has that well lived-in look and feel. Falling below the hip, its flattering hemline and lightweight design is thin enough for layering without venturing into bulky territory and suffocating your smaller frame. Not to mention the outdoorsy, vintage vibe works perfectly for fall and winter months. Flattering, stylish and seasonally appropriate? Sounds like a win to me.

Fast Facts

  • Size Range: X-Small to X-Large, regular, petite and tall
  • Materials: cotton canvas body with cotton flannel lining, nylon lining in sleeves, cotton corduroy collar and cuffs.
  • Color: loden, dark khaki

Best Packable

11. Land's End Ultralight Packable Down Coat

What We Like

  • figure-flattering
  • hood
  • zip pockets

What We Don't Like

  • colors could stand refreshing
  • narrowed wrists are tight over bulky sweaters

Land's End

What's better than a close-fitting, machine washable coat that's rated to keep you warm when it's down to three degrees above zero? Nothing except this coat, that has all those attributes plus it folds into its own pocket to become a handy travel-friendly bundle (i.e., travel pillow). With a nipped-in waist silhouette and tilted channels that flatter the figure, I love this coat for its Amtrak-to-Aspen suitability.

Fast Facts

  • Colors: red, black, brown, navy, light grey, black
  • Size Range: XS to XL, Regular, Petite, Tall, Plus
  • Materials: nylon shell, 800 fill power RDS HyperDry™ down

Frequently Asked Questions

What Length Coat Is Best for Short Women?

My advice? Search for coats that hit at the mid-calf or higher. This length works wonders when it comes to keeping your body warm without overwhelming your shorter stature. Additionally, note that styles that are tailored closer to your body as opposed to those with a looser, boyfriend fit also work well. If you are opting for a full-length coat, try one with a belted or cinched waist, which will help to define your figure and elongate your silhouette, creating an attractive long line.

Can Petites Wear Puffer Jackets?

Petites can definitely wear puffer jackets and coats—depending on the proportions. A more lean puffer that zips close to the body, with smaller channels of filling, will be more attractive than an oversized version. A puffer coat that is specially sized for petites, such as the Aritzia Super Puff Long, which comes in Short, Regular and Tall sizes, is a great choice since its body and arm length is shorter.

Should Short Women Wear Short Jackets?

Short answer: Yes and no. While short jackets can look great on a short bod, it's not a fashion absolute. Sometimes, an ankle-length coat can be ultra-dramatic on a petite, as we've seen on ultra-dramatic dressers such as 5'4" Florence Pugh. The trick when going long is to either leave the coat open to reveal your figure underneath or to belt it, so that you appear to have a waistline. And finally, stay away from super-stiff fabrics, unless you want to look like a fancy-dress militia member.
