Traveling with an Infant? Here’s How to Reserve a Bassinet on Board

baby in a bassinet

The good news: Your eight-month-old gets to fly for free. The bad news: Finding a comfortable position while holding a snoozing lap infant for the duration of a long-haul flight (think Europe) is easier said than done.

That's why so many seasoned travelers—who also happen to be parents—swear by this airline perk for babies: The option to reserve a bassinet.

It works like this: In lieu of a seat, many airlines offer a bassinet that bolts to the wall of the bulkhead (the seats at the front of the plane). There isn't usually an additional charge for this seating option, but space is obviously limited, and typically, there are just two bassinets available per flight, so it's first come, first served.

To reserve a bassinet, simply contact the airline and ask about it when you book your trip.

Then go back to enjoying access to that magical place known as your lap.
