The New #2 Movie on Netflix Puts a Horrifying Twist on ‘Dirty John’

It’s no secret we’ve watched a lot—we repeat, a lot—of movies on Netflix. However, we’ve never seen anything quite like this top-ranked film.

Introducing What Lies Below, a thrilling horror flick that will have you on the edge of your seat couch. Although it was originally released in Russia back in February, it just recently became available for streaming online.

Since its debut, it’s already claimed the number two spot on Netflix’s list of most-watched movies. (It’s currently ranked behind Concrete Cowboy and ahead of Friends with Benefits, Hop, Bad Trip and White Boy.)

The plot sort of gives off Hallmark vibes, following a socially awkward teenager, Liberty (Ema Horvath), as she finally meets her mother’s new fiancé. The problem? The man is so charming, she’s not convinced that he’s actually human. (Think of it as a cross between Dirty John and Deadly Illusions.)

In addition to Horvath (Don’t Look Deeper), What Lies Below also stars Mena Suvari (American Beauty), Trey Tucker (The Space Between Us), Troy Iwata (Probably), Danny Corbo (American Hustle), Olan Montgomery (The Roads Not Taken) and Haskiri Velazquez (Saved by the Bell).

The movie was directed by Braden R. Duemmler (Mimic), who also wrote the screenplay. Linus Hume (Chocolat), Abel Vang (Bedeviled), Kristina Esposito (Captive Love) and Stephen Stanley (Conway Pride) served as producers.

Thank you, Netflix. We really needed something to watch tonight.
