Next stop, Hollywood

Our favorite true-crime podcast trio are back on the case…again!

Today, the first episode of the highly anticipated Only Murders in the Building season four has premiered on Hulu. And to say that I am excited would be an understatement. You see, that bombshell season three finale left OMITB fans (myself included) with a myriad of burning questions. Just as a refresher: Sazz (played by Jane Lynch) was killed by a sniper rifle while fetching a bottle of wine from Charles’s apartment. In a not-so-surprising turn of events, viewers learn that someone was trying to kill Charles (Steve Martin), but shot Sazz by mistake. So, who was trying to kill Charles? And why?

What Is Only Murders in the Building Season 4 About?

Unlike previous seasons, one out of three Only Murders in the Building podcasters—Charles, Oliver (Martin Short) and Mabel (Selena Gomez)—are now at the center of a new murder mystery. This time around, the Arconia residents have left the Big Apple for sunny California, where Paramount Pictures is turning their true-crime podcast into a motion picture. Now, we have a new killer, new faces and a new setting. And dare I say, this may be the best season of Only Murders yet.

I watched the first episode of Only Murders in the Building season four and…I have a lot of thoughts. Keep reading for my honest review.

My Review of Only Murders in the Building Season 4

After getting a quick recap of season three, the first episode of season four starts off in a very interesting way. With Martin narrating in the background, audiences are greeted with never-before-seen home videos of the main cast. For example, viewers are shown an adorable video of pre-Disney Channel Gomez talking on a toy phone, a young Martin playing in his home backyard and Short taking a dip in a swimming pool.

“Motion pictures were created over a hundred years ago. And ever since then, we’ve had countless moving images emblazoned in our memories. And ever since then, we’ve had a chance to ask…is that what I look like?” Martin says as a video clip of his younger self flashes across the screen. Personally, I really enjoyed this opening because it offers a nice change of pace instead of jumping right into the mystery. Plus, it really plays on the movie theme, which will be the center of the narrative this time around.

As the first episode goes on, Mabel and Charles receive an email from Paramount Pictures, saying they want to arrange a meeting with the Only Murders in the Building podcasters to talk about a potential movie—and off to Hollywood they go. Similar to past seasons, this latest installment has no shortage of funny moments, from Charles and Oliver trying to negotiate their salaries for the film to Sazz’s comical flashback scenes.

But they are not the only stars of the show. Eugene Levy, Eva Longoria and Zach Galifianakis are cast to play Charles, Mabel and Oliver in the Only Murders in the Building movie; and they fit right into the OMITB universe. For instance, audiences get to see the witty banter between Martin and Levy on-screen, which is reminiscent of the characters they have played in films like Father of the Bride and Cheaper by the Dozen 2.

Of course, when Charles, Oliver and Mabel discover that Sazz is dead, they go into total detective mode and it feels like old times. This case is not like any other the core three have tackled in the past—this one hits really close to home (especially for Charles) because Sazz was a dear friend to all of them, making this season even more devastating and heartfelt to watch.

Without giving too much away, I will say that Only Murders in the Building season four is off to a good start and I can’t wait to see where the story goes from here.

PureWow Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars

Only Murders in the Building season four is gearing up to be one for the books. With Charles in the center of this intense murder mystery, the stakes are at an all-time high. And the new setting just adds to the fun. I will say, as a longtime fan of the show, it can get pretty repetitive with its cliché “whodunit” plot. Every season follows the same structure, but this enticing twist adds a new level of excitement to the show. Who would want Charles dead? And are Mabel and Oliver next? This may be the best season of Only Murders in the Building yet—and I’m here to enjoy the ride.

Episode two of Only Murders in the Building season four will be available to watch on Hulu on September 3, 2024. The remainder of the episodes will premiere every Tuesday until the season four finale.
