firefly lane ending theory

*Warning: Spoilers ahead*

As a fan of Kristin Hannah’s 2008 book, I’m genuinely impressed by how well Netflix adapted Firefly Lane for TV. Still, the popular series left me with several burning questions that weren’t addressed in the novel—in particular, what happened between Tallulah “Tully” Hart (Katherine Heigl) and Kate Mularky (Sarah Chalke)?

Unfortunately, season one of Firefly Lane didn’t share too many details about the rift in their friendship, since it focused more on their childhoods and budding careers. But if I had to make a prediction, I’d say that Tully is on the outs because she repeated history by sleeping with Kate’s soon-to-be ex-husband, Johnny (Ben Lawson).

I’m not saying that Tully doesn’t respect her friendship with Kate—she does. However, there’s so much history between Kate, Tully and Johnny that it seems like the most logical explanation to throw away decades of memories.

The reason comes back to the way Kate handled Tully’s first romantic encounter with Johnny. Although she and Johnny weren’t officially “together,” Kate was still extremely hurt by Tully’s actions.

So, if Tully were to betray Kate in the midst of her divorce (knowing she still has feelings for Johnny), I’d understand why Kate doesn’t want anything to do with Tully at this point in her life.

Fool Kate once, shame on her. Fool her twice? Don’t even bother coming to her dad’s funeral.
