Elliot Page Praises Netflix for His Character’s Transition in ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Season 3

Elliot Page’s new character, Viktor Hargreeves, has made his official debut in The Umbrella Academy season three. Viktor, formerly known as Vanya Hargreeves, came out as transgender in the new season and changed his name. And now, Page is sharing his thoughts on the character’s transition.

In an exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the 35-year-old actor praised the writers for how they handled and incorporated Viktor’s transition into the storyline. The writers chose to change Vanya’s gender identity after the actor came out as transgender and nonbinary in December 2020.

“Viktor always resonated so deeply from the get-go,” he said in the interview. “I think one of the most special things about this is how it’s handled. It’s not void of emotional moments with the siblings, of course.”

Page recalled a scene in the new season and explained how it mirrors his real-life experiences. “[There’s a scene] when Luther and Diego are coming down the stairs and Luther's awkwardness and all these things… simultaneously, I’m experiencing all that, because I’ve stepped into this moment where I’m a trans person and perceived that way, and having all these new experiences I didn't have before,” the actor said.

He added, “These scenes were resonating with that, which was really incredible.”

Back in March, the Inception alum introduced audiences to Viktor on Instagram. In the snapshot, his character was sitting in a diner and sporting a black leather jacket with a hoodie. Page wrote in the caption, “Meet Viktor Hargreeves,” alongside a purple umbrella emoji.

And we wouldn’t want it any other way.
