Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Garner Love This Gripping Thriller—Did You Catch the Easter Egg in It?

Like many readers, I live for a good Easter egg in a book I'm reading. So does author Laura Dave, who took to Instagram the other day to share a secret little callback moment from The Last Thing He Told Me, her 2021 novel that was selected for Reese's Book Club—and then turned into an AppleTV+ series produced by Reese Witherspoon and starring Jennifer Garner.

First, a quick plot summary just in case you forgot: The novel is about the mysterious disappearance of a man, Owen, who, before he goes missing, slips a note to Hannah, his beloved wife of one year: Protect Her, it says. The note refers to Bailey, Owen's teenage daughter, who wants absolutely nothing to do with her new stepmother. But Hannah and Bailey set out to solve the mystery, they quickly realize they're also building a new future that neither of them could have anticipated.

As Dave shares in the video, in the second chapter of the book, when the characters Owen and Hannah meet, Hannah mishears Owen's name and calls him Ethan. Later in the book, it's revealed that his name actually is Ethan. Dave says it was her little Easter egg for readers, as though Hannah saw who he was before she was allowed to know who he was.

She adds that a bunch of Reese's Book Club fans reached out to her to ask if it was on purpose or an error. Dave says, "So good job for those of you that caught that Easter egg."

If you loved the book and all of its twists and turns, you'll likely enjoy the AppleTV+ series of the same name, starring Jennifer Garner, which former Assistant Editor of News and Entertainment Karelle McKay gave 4 out of 5 stars in a review. She wrote, "Mystery show lovers will surely enjoy The Last Thing He Told Me because it has an intriguing storyline. Fans of the original book will also find the show quite satisfying. And Jennifer Garner gives a performance that you will not forget."
